Backers of initiative to legalize marijuana in Alaska turn in signatures

Source: Anchorage Daily News

Backers of a proposed ballot initiative to legalize marijuana in Alaska turned in what they said were 46,000 signatures to a state Division of Elections office Wednesday, putting the issue one step closer to a public vote.

If the state certifies the signatures, a measure asking Alaskans whether they want to legalize pot for recreational use will appear on the 2014 primary ballot in August.

Backers need a total of about 30,000 qualified signatures.

If it passes, the state would set up a system to regulate the production, sales and taxation of marijuana in a manner similar to the way alcohol is currently regulated, backers said Wednesday. Colorado-style pot shops could start popping up in Alaska within a year or two.

If we go with the 30% figure, that's 13,800 disqualified, leaving 32,200 valid signatures.

I'll be sweating until this is official. Once it qualifies for the ballot, it should be a slam dunk.
