UPDATED: Gay Marriage Opponents Call For Uprising In Utah

CAITLIN MACNEAL – JANUARY 5, 2014, 4:30 PM EST

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association on Saturday organized a meeting in Highland, Utah to call for an uprising and to express their opposition to same-sex marriage in Utah, Fox 13 Now Salt Lake City reported.

"The people of Utah have rights, too, not just the homosexuals. The homosexuals are shoving their agenda down our throats," Former Graham County, Ariz., Sheriff Richard Mack said at the meeting.

A federal judge in December struck down Utah's ban on same-sex marriage, and courts subsequently denied the state's request for a temporary stay, which would keep counties from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples while the state appeals the ruling.

By the third stay denial, most counties in Utah were issuing licenses to all couples.

Who is the "Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association?"

Looks like another rightwing group that is convinced the nation is in trouble and only they can save us.

http://cspoa.org/about/message-from-mack/

From their website:

"46 Anti-American US Senators vote for the UN Gun Control Treaty"

"State sovereignty under attack"

"List of sheriffs and peace officers who say 'No' to Obama gun control"

"CSPOA being used to stop Obamacare"

The CEO (and possibly the only member) has an online store where you can buy a copy of his book: "The County Sheriff: America's Last Hope"

1. What is it with these dumb-asses who don't know what the word "rights" means?

Not to mention their obsession with the "shoved down our throats" expression.

If this court decision hadn't been reported in the news, they wouldn't even be aware that gay people were getting married now.

Losers.

54. In the few functioning brain cells they have, equality means only for them, civil rights

means only for them, everything only exists for them, these assholes have been around since the beginning of time, I'm convinced it's really a state of how their brains function as opposed to learned behavior. And, change the label, and it's still the same old theme. Persecutory, regressive asshole - haters.

5. Judiciary is one major block against the Tyranny of the Majority.

A majority can't take away rights of a minority.

If those Sheriffs and Peace Officers marriages are strong, they have nothing to fear from same-sex marriages.

Gay men are not going to steal their wives. (We may assume that they are almost all men.)

If the LEO are secure in their heterosexuality they will not fear being seduced into adultery by gay men.

10. If they want to call themselves the "Constitutional"

Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association they should understand how the system works......

In our country the judiciary interprets the Constitution. The concept of "judicial review" was novel when it was first presented in Marbury v. Madison but it is now settled law in this country.

If a judge issues a ruling that ruling is to be respected. Parties with standing can appeal a ruling or decision of the court but it follows a defined process.

They seem to be under the impression that the majority may exercise tyranny over the minority. That is exactly what our Founding Fathers engineered against. They did it when they established checks and balances. They did if when they enacted the Bill of Rights. They did it when they created a process for amending the Constitution that was long, hard and arduous. They did it when they gave each state two Senators so that the large states could not dominate the small ones.

In this country rights aren't determined by vote. Rights are determined according to our Constitution and the courts through their exercise of judicial review.

If they want to have majority rule suggest they move to Saudi Arabia or Iran. I will help pack their bags.

So there is a difference between "The people of Utah" and "homosexuals"? This assumes that if you are homosexual you are not "people" of Utah. How absurd.

62. this week is the anniversary:

Rosewood massacre

A black and white photograph of ashes from a burned building with several people standing nearby; trees in the distance
The remains of Sarah Carrier's house where two blacks and two whites were killed in Rosewood in January 1923

The Rosewood massacre was a violent, racially motivated conflict that took place during the first week of January 1923 in rural Levy County, Florida, United States. At least six blacks and two whites were killed, and the town of Rosewood was abandoned and destroyed in what contemporary news reports characterized as a race riot. Racial disturbances were common during the early 20th century in the United States, reflecting the nation's rapid social changes. Florida had an especially high number of lynchings in the years before the massacre, including the well-publicized Perry race riot where a black man had been burned at the stake in December 1922.

Rosewood was a quiet, primarily black, self-sufficient whistle stop on the Seaboard Air Line Railway. Spurred by unsupported accusations that a white woman in nearby Sumner had been beaten and possibly raped by a black drifter, white men from nearby towns lynched a Rosewood resident. When black citizens defended themselves against further attack, several hundred whites combed the countryside hunting for black people and burned almost every structure in Rosewood. Survivors hid for several days in nearby swamps and were evacuated by train and car to larger towns. Although state and local authorities were aware of the violence, they made no arrests for the activities in Rosewood. The town was abandoned by black residents during the attacks. None ever returned.

Although the rioting was widely reported around the country, few official records documented the event. Survivors, their descendants, and the perpetrators remained silent about Rosewood for decades. Sixty years after the rioting, the story of Rosewood was revived in major media when several journalists covered it in the early 1980s. Survivors and their descendants organized to sue the state for having failed to protect them. In 1993, the Florida Legislature commissioned a report on the events. As a result of the findings, Florida became the first U.S. state to compensate survivors and their descendants for damages incurred because of racial violence. The massacre was the subject of a 1997 film directed by John Singleton. In 2004, the state designated the site of Rosewood as a Florida Heritage Landmark.

48. I thought law enforcement officers were supposed to uphold the law

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association on Saturday organized a meeting in Highland, Utah to call for an uprising and to express their opposition to same-sex marriage in Utah,

49. Laws are so selectively enforced in so many instances

it's getting to be a joke

What happened to hierarchical order? Chain of command?
Respect for the law, no matter what it is?

Oh, that's only when GWB was in office. Liberal laws don't count.

53. Guess they'll want to call up the KKK and give them the gay target. Black people, Immigrants,

Gays, Jewish people, these assholes always have a target. Strip away the labels and it's the same old shit, irrational hatred and persecution of minorities. We use to have to drive through Utah on cross country travel, like some other states, we always did it so few gas or eating stops were required if any.

58. According to Maddow the Utah attorney general forgot to file the paper work to ask for a

stay in case they lost. Maybe people should be looking at how incompetent their state government is.

60. "The people of Utah have rights, too, not just the homosexuals."

Yes, everyone in Utah now has the right to remain single or marry the person of his or her choice. Until recently, everyone in Utah except homosexuals had that right because people like you had succeeded in forcing your agenda on everyone else.

Unless someone is forcing you to marry a person of your own gender, no one is forcing any agenda on you, now or in the past.

Shut up.
