U.S. Rep. Ellison arrested during immigration rally

Source: star tribune

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison was arrested Tuesday by U.S. Capitol Police during an immigration rally on the National Mall.
As protestors marched toward the U.S. Capitol, Ellison and several other House Democrats sat in the middle of Independence Avenue, blocking rush hour traffic.
Police led Ellison away in cuffs shortly after 4 p.m.
Ellison’s office said the move was an act of “civil disobedience” designed to urge Congress to pass legislation that would allow the nation’s undocumented immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship.

1. At least someone in Congress is actively protesting the inertia of his/her own

The government is closed for business, but your rights remain.

4. So if I go to the mall with a sign saying "vote now" or "Republicans Suck" I could walk around?

Could I go to the WWII memorial while I am there? If the 1st amendment allows protests then I can do that and not arrested?

15. The Congressmen were blocking the street.

]
Grijalva and the other congressman were among about 208 people who blocked the street to the Capitol in an act of civil disobedience following the rally. The other protesters lined the streets.

Of the 15000, only those who blocked the street were arrested in a non-violent non-compiance with the law in order to raise awareness for their cause.

AS I understand it, they were given a permit for the protest on the Mall in order to protest as have others.

21. Unfortunately, since the Mall is closed, nobody but the protesters was there to see the protest

If the congressmen hadn't been arrested I wonder if anybody would have even known about it.

22. That may have been why a group decided to perform an acdt of civic disobedience.

It was a common tactic used by Gandhi, King, and many, many others.

In an attempt to ramp up the heat on their colleagues, several members of Congress joined advocacy leaders and were arrested in a show of civil disobedience to send a message to act on immigration reform – an issue that has so far stalled on Capitol Hill amid a showdown over fiscal policy.

“I’ve been arrested a few times, and I don’t mind getting arrested again for something that is right and fair and just,” said Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the civil rights icon known for his involvement in the March on Washington a half-century ago.

Lewis was joined by fellow Democratic Reps. Charlie Rangel of New York, Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, Raul Grijalva of Arizona, Joe Crowley of New York, Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Al Green of Texas in blocking the streets near the National Mall to bring attention to their efforts.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.)
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.)
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas)
Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.)
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.)
Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.)

Over half a dozen members of Congress were arrested on Oct. 8 at an immigration rally in Washington D.C., including Charles Rangel, Luis Gutiérrez, and Al Green

Reps. Joseph Crowley, Raul Grivjalva, Jan Schakowsky, John Lewis, and Keith Ellison were also arrested, reported Huffington Post reporter Elise Foley.

6. Good for him but the reality is

Not to belittle his contribution in any way, but a misdemeanor arrest on us little people carries a lot more baggage than he will get from it.

7. There's more

The comments came as several hundred activists — from young children wearing white T-shirts that read “Don’t Deport My Dad” to activists cheering and waving signs that proclaimed: “No Human is Illegal” — gathered on the Mall on a cool October afternoon. More than a dozen congressional Democrats and four House Republicans came before the crowd to push for a reform bill in the House.

Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) was spotted shimmying backstage when sounds of the popular Mexican band Los Tigres del Norte, which was headlining the event, began to blare through the loudspeakers.

20. Center for American Progress: Pressing on for Immigration Reform

Demonstrators hold up their banners during an immigration rally on the National Mall on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, calling on the House of Representatives to pass comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

Last weekend, as pundits and politicians debated the consequences of the government shutdown and a looming deadline on the debt limit, thousands of immigrants, advocates, and allies came together for a National Day for Dignity and Respect, where they held 183 events in 151 towns and cities across 40 states. This week, advocates are rallying on the Mall in Washington, D.C., committing acts of civil disobedience, fasting, and filling the halls of Congress to urge House members to vote for immigration reform.

The good news is there is now a bill that House members can actually vote on. Last week, House Democrats introduced a comprehensive immigration reform bill that shares many provisions with the bipartisan legislation that the Senate passed in June with 14 Republican votes and with the House Judiciary Committee’s border security proposal, a bill that received unanimous bipartisan support when it passed out of committee.

And here’s the thing: The votes are there to pass a bill. Many House Republicans want to get immigration reform off the table and move forward. Although House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) claims he doesn’t have enough votes to pass a comprehensive bill, what he means is he doesn’t have a Republican majority to pass such a bill. In the old days, putting together a bipartisan majority to pass legislation was called doing your job. These days, it’s called treason.

Unfortunately for Boehner, he may find himself stranded on a shrinking ice floe inhabited by a small band of Tea Party activists whose shrill anti-immigrant complaints stem from bias, not reality. Unfortunately for the rest of us, Boehner is letting a band of tyrants rule as if they were the majority.
