Chavez heads to Cuba for urgent tumor removal

President Hugo Chavez bid an emotional farewell laced with references to Jesus Christ and independence hero Simon Bolivar Friday as he departed Venezuela for Cuba for urgent surgery to remove a tumor he says is probably malignant.

Clasping the hand of his youngest daughter, Chavez addressed allies of his socialist political movement and troops standing at attention at the Miraflores presidential palace.

"I say this from my gut: With cancer or without cancer ... come rain, thunder or lightning ... nobody can avoid a great patriotic victory Oct. 7," the president said, refering to the date of Venezuela's presidential elections. "Long live Chavez!" he cried.

The socialist president, who is seeking re-election, spoke of the tribulations of Bolivar and the burdens borne by Christ.

I'm not wishing this on Chavez at all, I'm just wondering.

What would happen if Hugo Chavez died?
Does he have a VP?

...if he leaves for an extended stay. But that has not happened nor will it likely happen.

And if Chavez selects a different VP before the surgery (in the event he dies) it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Overall I do wish him well and want him to be electorally defeated as opposed to defeated by the reaper.

And I tell you, if you lived in my country for the amount of years that I did, you would see just how much damage this asshole has done to it. I DO wish that he left power through losing the October elections against Capriles, but honestly, if he died, I would NOT give a flying f**k. In fact, I would just say "Good riddance". The man has done nothing but make my country regress in every way imaginable, and I really don't understand how he's got supporters in this website.

And before you accuse me of being some right-winger, or an anti-socialism capitalist, lemme just tell you that I sure as hell am NOT any of those things. Socialism is not a bad thing. Hell, I only WISH that the US would embrace it. But the socialism that Chávez wants to impose in Venezuela is definitely NOT the good kind. It's not the kind of socialism that European countries have. After nearly 14 years, inflation has gone through the roof, the country is barely producing anything for itself (we're importing almost everything now), which is likely a side-effect from his government forcefully taking away private firms and properties which used to be highly productive until they were seized. Crime rates have only gone up dramatically (approximately 130,000 murders a year, and that's without including those that nobody officially notices), media censorship is almost dictatorial, the infrastructure is in a horrible mess (this, of course, has much to do with the incalculable corruption within Chávez's government), our public education is mediocre at best, and Chávez himself has instigated a social-class war between the rich and the poor. His speeches are always filled with hate, always promoting hostility towards the "oligarchs". He also sends enormous amounts of cash to his buddies in Latin-America, namely the Castros in Cuba, and the also highly regressive governments of Ecuador and Bolivia, and what do we get in return? Almost nothing, especially when compared to how much cash those governments get from us. All the while, he's purchasing old Russian military tech to arm his militias against God-knows-what. He uses the excuse that it's to prepare for a potential US-led invasion, but we all know that's not gonna happen. Obviously he's arming his militia because he's afraid of the people revolting some day against his regime, so he's simply just assuring his spot as the man with the most guns. Oh, and let's not forget his association with other corrupt organizations like the close relationship he has with the Iranian government. There is nothing redeeming about this man, and for that, I wish he would not die, but instead rot in prison for the rest of his life in the case that he'd lose the October elections. But like I said, I would also not mind if he died, because frankly, when I think about all the damage he's done to my nation, I can't even have the smallest amount of pity for him. GOOD-Fucking-RIDDANCE.

from the Chavez idolizers on this board. After all, what do YOU know about the effect of Chavez's policies in Venezuela - you just live there. Don't you understand that he is the reincarnation of Simon Bolivar and Che Guevara rolled into one, creating the perfect Socialist Bolivarian Paradise? Must be something wrong with you...

Venezuela's Chavez has shot at a cure: doctors
By Julie Steenhuysen
CHICAGO | Sat Feb 25, 2012 10:22am EST

(Reuters) - As Hugo Chavez heads to Cuba to have surgery on a second lesion in his pelvis, medical experts say the Venezuelan president still has a chance to be cured, but he may have to battle fatigue as he campaigns for re-election in October.

After declaring himself cancer-free last October, Chavez now says he has a 2 centimeter (0.79 inch) lesion in the same pelvic area where doctors in Cuba removed a baseball-sized tumor during his original treatment last year.

Doctors say the fact that Chavez' cancer has returned is worrisome, but the second surgery will give him one more chance at a cure.

"If it is localized and they can get it out and they get good, clean surgical margins, there is a 20 to 25 percent chance that he could be cured," said Dr. Richard Schilsky, a specialist in gastrointestinal cancers at University of Chicago Medicine who is not treating Chavez.

He WILL make it. I choose to think positive. And I would NEVER, EVER post a piece about a right wing CIA-backed politician having cancer, for the purpose of damning with faint praise.

So tired of right wing assholes. They're all over the place. We are infested.

....I wish capitalist President Obama would wish Socialist President Chavez well; that way President Obama could feign US concern over President Chavezs' well-being on the world-stage and maybe create soon good vibes....

....still, cancer is hard to beat....soon, the Chavez 'gonna be dictator for life' haters may have no one to hate....they will then be able to regroup and refocus all their fascist energy and attention on some other duly elected un-capitalist supposed wannabe dictator....
