Syria: If United States Attacks, We'll Attack Israel (with "strategic weapons" & terrorist groups)

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Turborama (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Virtual Jerusalem

As talk and rumors of an impending Western attack against Syria mount, a top Syrian official said Monday that if attacked, his country would react - against Israel.

Speaking to an Arabic-language radio station operated by the United States, Syria's Deputy Information Minister Halaf Al-Maftah said that Israel would face not only Syria in the event that the US, Britain and France attempted to unseat Bashar al-Assad. A coalition consisting of Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria would respond to any attack against Assad with a response against Israel. In addition, terrorist groups in Syria and Lebanon would attack Israel with full force.

Al-Maftah added that Syria has "strategic weapons" that it would use in its attack on Israel. He did not specify what those weapons were.

"Syria is ready to deal with all scenarios," said Al-Maftah. "We consider these declarations of a possible attack as a form of psychological warfare and pressure on Syria. We are not worried about them. We hope that those threatening us will listen closely to what we are saying. We believe that the only solution for the Syrian issue is a political one," he added.

In recent days, the U.S. has sent warships off Syria's coast, with the assumption being that they were waiting for word from the White House to attack Syria and remove Assad from power. Over the weekend, the U.S. Navy expanded its presence in the Mediterranean Sea with a fourth cruise-missile-armed warship.

Threatening Israel, no less with terrorist attacks, after being accused of employing chemical weapons against your own people, is sure to improve Assad's standing in American polls concerning military action. (/sarcasm)

After all, war and all the death and destruction that comes with it are on the other side of the world. It's easy to say "go ahead" or "bring it on" or "I dare you" when it's not your ass on the line.

Americans treat war like it's a fucking joke, just another reality show on between American Idol and Survivor. They'll stick another yellow ribbon on the back of their gas guzzling SUV, buy a couple of American flag t-shirts (made in China) and go about their lives.

Some here are having cruise missile fantasies. Sure, we can do cruise missiles, and we probably will. But that will almost certainly kill civilians, and it won't ultimately be effective anyway. At some point, some bright general is going to bring up the point that we'll have to put "boots on the ground". What could go wrong?

That's a lot of countries and most of the world's defense spending:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO; /ˈneɪtoʊ/ NAY-toh; French: Organisation du traité de l'Atlantique Nord (OTAN)), also called the (North) Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium, one of the 28 member states across North America and Europe, the newest of which, Albania and Croatia, joined in April 2009. An additional 22 countries participate in NATO's "Partnership for Peace", with 15 other countries involved in institutionalized dialogue programs. The combined military spending of all NATO members constitutes over 70% of the world's defence spending.[4]

Also on Monday, a senior Iranian parliamentarian said Israel would be the first victim of such a war.

“No military attack will be waged against Syria,” said Hossein Sheikholeslam, the Iranian parliament’s director-general for international affairs, according to the report. “Yet, if such an incident takes place, which is impossible, the Zionist regime will be the first victim of a military attack on Syria.”

The whole situation is a big fat mess, with no easy answers whatsoever. However, there is likely an Islamic religious element to the Syrian conflict, and I think it does come into play with the entire region among Muslims. Think of it in the same vein as the Irish Catholic/Protestant conflict.

to inflict those sort of mass casualties? We were sold a similar bag just over ten years ago. Pardon me and others for being a tad bit skeptical.

Assad's sole goal is self preservation. He's a brutal psychopath, but he's rationale enough to understand that attacking Israel with any WMD, means the end of his and his family's rule. What motive does he have to attack Israel with chemical weapons?

A response from Israel would immediately destroy an Arab support for Western intervention. If the intervention takes place, and Israel is in any way involved, the Arab nations will balk. Remember when Iraq attacked Israel during the first Iraq war and they were told not to respond?

Mon Aug 26, 2013, 11:54 PM

but in such a situation, Israel would respond, our feint calls of restraint falling on deaf ears...

There is no way in hell Netanyahu would sit by if Assad were so stupid. Netanyahu has also shown his sheer lack of interest in giving a shit as to what the US or anyone else says or does. And Israel was prepared to attack Iraq in '91 as well:
http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2012-07-01/news/32494974_1_scud-yitzhak-shamir-missile-fire

I don't think Assad is that insane. As I said, I think he's a psychopath, but I don't think he's suicidal. He has held out this long, and is closer than ever in recapturing key areas. He still also has Putin's support. I think his only concern is staying in power and ensuring the continuing dynasty of the Alawite Kingdom.

Unlike Iraq, the proximity of Syria means MULTIPLE locations can be hit at once with little to no time for the Israelis to react. A chemical attack against Israel....well, I said to my partner this afternoon, were Assad to do this, their would be no American voice that would restrain Israel and Damascus would likely be nothing more than rubble.

I was aware of the Israeli plans to attack Iraq, but as history shows, it didn't happen, and I don't think a chemical attack from Syria would be met with the same restraint. I agree Assad is a psychopath, but if he is desperate enough, he could do it in hopes that an Israeli response would trigger and Arab response against Israel, leaving the Western powers scratching their asses, while begging Israel to do nothing. Were he to attack Israel, it would be with Russian approval, of that, I have no doubt. But, that is my answer to your question.

I really do hope nothing happens of any major scale, but the mass killings have to stop! I keep asking what the UN is even for, I mean other than to "criticize" Israel? Why aren't they the policemen of the world?

49. Stopping madness of this scale requires political will on a global scale and above all TRUST -

Trust that was squandered by the US and UK ten years ago when it went after Iraq. No one at this point really cares when the US goes on about human rights abuses elsewhere, not after being in an endless war in God knows how many countries. Not only that but it also requires actors on a world stage that aren't fueled by greed and their own desire for power.

We're not to be trusted. Russia and China both realize this and have taken advantage of it. Putin (in his view) is restoring Russia's image as a strong nation, capable of stopping US imperialism. Never mind the fact that he's as ruthless and cynical a politician as they come. He knows that if he backed down, Russia wouldn't be seen as a trustworthy or respectable ally by anyone in the future. And besides, there's also the fact that Syria's rebels are backed first and foremost by Saudi Arabia, perhaps it's main rival on the global energy sphere (and certainly the largest rival in that region).

The Chinese wish to expand their influence as well as find new sources of energy to fuel their economy.

The situation in Syria is horrific and tragic, but I fear we're just getting sucked into the beginning of another Cold War. There is simply no end to this conflict. I wish we could help the Syrian people, but I just don't understand how or why the US has to be involved in almost every civil war around the globe. It is also time that regional players like Turkey step up if they are so concerned about the killing.

"The situation in Syria is horrific and tragic" can't be said enough. But how to get out of it? How to do the moral and just thing in regards to what is happening? The Middle East should be renamed the Gordian Knot.

On edit: Off topic: Have you seen "50 Children"? If not, you might want to watch it. It was very good!

I will check the film out sometime. I have HBO Go. Hopefully it's on available on that.

Argh, sometimes I wish I could just block out what is happening in the world and just be more concerned by non-events like Miley Cyrus.

LOL! So true! But, I will say, I like reading your posts and find them quite informative, even if sometimes I may not agree; at least I think.

Attack Israel, and no one is going to say anything when they completely level Damascus. Believe me, they WANT Assad to attack.

The war hawk right is pushing this .. no doubt. They won't be happy till all the middle east is under their control. More death and destruction and the loss of life for the innocent .. collateral damage they call it. Obama will do exactly what the Generals tell him to do. He has no military experience, nor balls to tell them to stand down. I hope all these congress people are having a wonderful holiday .. they're so deserving for their ''hard work''. Fact is we are powerless over the conflicts in the middle east .. and we don't know the truth .. so much is manipulated to sway public opinion .. no thanks to our MSM. If you want the real news go to Al jazeera. The problem with Israel is that they have become such an extension of the U.S. that what ever they plan on doing will involve us as well. In any case, this is a win win for military contractors whose boards are filled with retired generals .. yeah, let's have us another war $$$. Washington, The Military Industrial Complex, and Wall Street .. have drained this country. Rant over.

"Thank you and hello New York! Okay, it’s been a little while, it’s been a little while since I’ve been here and a couple of things have happened in that time.

I’d like to talk a little bit about the war in the Persian Gulf... biiiiiig doings in the Persian Gulf. You know my favourite part of that war? It’s the first war we ever had that was on every channel plus cable... and the war got good ratings too, didn’t it? Got good ratings! Well, we like war!!!

We like war! We’re a war-like people! We like war because we’re good at it! You know why we’re good at it?

Cause we get a lot of practice. This country’s only 200 years old and already, we’ve had 10 major wars.

We average a major war every 20 years in this country so we’re good at it! And it’s a good thing we are; we’re not very good at anything else anymore! Huh?

Can’t build a decent car, can’t make a TV set or a VCR worth a fuck, got no steel industry left, can’t educate our young people, can’t get health care to our old people, but we can bomb the shit out of your country all right! Huh?

Especially if your country is full of brown people; oh we like that don’t we? That’s our hobby! That’s our new job in the world: bombing brown people. Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Libya, you got some brown people in your country, tell them to watch the fuck out or we’ll goddamn bomb them!

Well when’s the last white people you can remember that we bombed?
