Chris Christie Hits Back At Rand Paul Remark On Sandy Aid

Source: Huffington Post

LITTLE FERRY, N.J. -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie doesn't appear to want his war of words with Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul to end anytime soon. Christie fired back at Paul on Tuesday for Paul's remark that New Jersey has a "Gimme, gimme, gimme" attitude about federal aid for Superstorm Sandy.

Paul said at a fundraiser in Nashville on Sunday that Christie and New York Rep. Peter King – both Republicans like Paul – "are the people who are bankrupting the government and not letting enough money be left over for national defense." Speaking at a news conference to announce homeowner grants for northern New Jersey residents affected by Sandy, Christie said he "has nothing personal" against Paul but offered the following:

"I find it interesting that Sen. Paul is accusing us of having a "Gimme, gimme, gimme" attitude toward federal spending when in fact New Jersey is a donor state and we get 61 cents back on every dollar we send to Washington. Interestingly, Kentucky gets $1.51 on every dollar they send to Washington," he said. "So if Sen. Paul wants to start looking at where he's going to cut spending to afford defense, maybe he should start looking at the pork barrel spending he brings home to Kentucky."

The spat between the two Republicans many consider potential 2016 presidential hopefuls began when they differed over warrantless surveillance programs. Paul is against them, while Christie says they are needed for national security.

I'm still voting for Buono come November. But I'm glad he put the little shit in his place and pointed out the obvious . . . Oh what we could have done had that money stayed here in the first place.

And this is why (this differentiation) I think Christie could get blue states to vote for him in a general election. All he needs is his friend Rove to fix the primaries so he gets to be the candidate. . .

Considering the GOP bows to Old Dixie, and that he will be down there looking for votes come 2016, it took genuine guts to point at the Elephant in the Room, that Dixie gets a lot more from the North than she gives back. I wish some of our folks would say the same thing, but then again, we keep having to look for people from Dixie to run (including a certain former Wal mart executive who lives in New York, but spent most of her life in Arkansas with her husband.)

She grew up in Illinois and spent her young adult life in college and then was in Arkansas for the years that Bill was Governor, and in between, maybe 12 years or so. Since she is in her mid 60's, that would mean that most of her life was spent in Illinois, Washington, DC, and New York, and that doesn't count her college years, which were also up North.

As to Wal mart, as First Lady of Arkansas, it would have been a slap in the face not to accept a seat on the Board of Directors of their most important industry. She's smart, not stupid.

54. Crazy Idea

Speaking of an ideological fight in the Republican Party, I had a crazy idea. We all know that Chris Christie is a conservative Republican and nobody here wants to see him become President. However Christie is not a total tea-bagger wacko like Rand Paul or Paul Ryan. So this leads me to a crazy idea. Let’s say Christie were to win the White House in 2016. Maybe, just maybe Christie will draw right-leaning moderate voters back to the GOP who will then slowly put the squeeze the super-conservative nut job voters (who are dying off anyway) thus allowing the Republican party to move to the center. With a more centrist GOP, the Democratic party could then move to the left, hopefully with the help of legal immigrants from Latin America, becoming far more progressive giving disenfranchised liberal voters (like us) candidates we might actually want to vote for. Imagine undoing the damage done by the so-called “Reagan Revolution” in 1980 and Bill Clinton’s “Third Way” that moved the Democratic Party too close to the center in 1992.

A president Christie just may lead to a major party realignment. After all it would be nice if the two major parties actually reflected the political views of the American People.

57. I don't want a Republican either.

The Republican party in in its current "bat-shit crazy" state is not sustainable. Inevitably the two parties will realign, I was just offering a possible path to realignment. I think there are a lot of people on DU (I've lurked here for a while) would love to see a more progressive Democratic Party.

Look at it this way. If we were to get say, single payer healthcare, a living wage and a tax system that's actually fair for the poor and the middle class would you care what party was in control of the House or the Senate when each bill passed? Would you care if the President was a Democrat, Republican or a Whig as long as he/she signed those bills into law?

59. Yes It did teach me something.

The Republican party can't go on much longer in its current form. the tea bag movement is falling apart and with more and more Americans identifying their religion as "none" the Christian Right will soon collapse. Not to mention that fact that the racist old white male Fox News watchers who have been voting Republican all these years are dying off. I know its hard to see it now but in the coming years the Republican Party will either change or be replaced.

61. I'm assisting a Republican council member in Orange County, CA

Our city has been targeted by the same people who advise the Walker Adm. of Wisconsin and his approach to governance. Meaning firing public employees and bad mouthing Republicans who disagree with their radical movement. There is no welcome for even rational Republicans in the party. Democrats are practically dismissed as being pathetic because we object to taking away what we've had all this time - public workers and good pensions. They also intend to buy up the city for private development. Our nonpartisan group has no financial power or high profile backing. We're fighting this machine on our own.

Turns out that uneducated goons and thugs are handling their PR campaign. They call their own Republican a liar, and worse. She is standing strong and fighting them and I'm trying to help. Democrats couldn't get on to the council this past election. Up until 2008 the only Democrat on the council was married to a firefighter and had the support of the public workers, who the GOP is successfuly trying to get rid of.

It's a horrible situation which some Republican residents disapprove of, but with their PR and given the backing of the OC GOP and probably the Koch Bros, they will likely succeed. We are trying to fight the barrage of lies and persistent efforts to steal our city out from under us. Their aim is reaching angry Republican voters who've come to HATE Democrats and democratic ideals and convincing them to trust them with their city. Meaning - Don't trust Democrats with anything.

I say Christie will win this war of words easily! He has a "smart mouth" as my mom used to say (won't say who she would say it to, but he later became the attorney of the family)! Christie was either good enough, or smart enough, to stand with Obama during the disaster and pull together. I believe he helped rather than hindered disaster policy implementation. Paul is a cheap knock off of his dad. Dad at least takes predictable principled stances, son not so much! He will stand on principle where it suits him and change with the wind when it doesn't. If Kentucky had a big natural disaster, Rand would use it as an opportunity to politicize and grab the money. Rand is a small, petty man!

That should go VIRAL.

My new one for answering Dittohead Teabaggers:

'You say minimum wage, unions, worker rights and certain people voting are bad for business. Good news, there's a tried and proven economic model that will suit you fine, then.

It's called slavery. Great for business, it was. Keep on voting for those selling that stuff and you and your kids will get there.'

They all end up looking like this, though...

And then there's the need for a dust pan to clean up the brain matter...
