Q Poll: Anthony Weiner Clings To Primary Lead; Would Fall To Bill Thompson In Runoff

Source: NY Daily News

Mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner's clinging to a razor-thin Democratic primary win in the latest Quinnipiac University poll -- but he'd fall to Bill Thompson in a two-man runoff.

If the former congressman stays in the race, he gets 26% support from likely voters in the Democratic primary, followed by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn at 22% and Thompson, the ex-controller, at 20%.

But -- and here's the news -- if it goes to a runoff, Thompson handily trumps Weiner 52% to 41% and beats Quinn 51% to 42%.

If Weiner and Quinn ended up in a second-round faceoff, Quinnipiac -- which concluded the four-day poll on Tuesday, when Weiner was forced to cop to engaging in more sextcapades after quitting Congress -- sets it at a statistical tie: 46% for Quinn and 44% for Weiner.

I can see the NY Post headline: Weiner on top in a three-way

(nb - this was conducted before the latest "news"; a new Marist Poll will be out tomorrow)

They will make huge political hay by making him the poster child for the Democratic party.

5. Weiner's strength in this race is due mainly to his support for municipal single-payer healthcare

He was the only candidate to endorse the idea, an idea which has majority support nationwide and massive resonance among the Democratic base AND the rest of the 99%.

I'd strongly advise the SextManiac's opponents to endorse the idea themselves since that would probably cause Weiner to crater in the polls.

But I agree that his support for municipal single payer healthcare should be adopted by all of the candidates.

Deblasio is the most progressive and most honest candidate and it is surprising he has not embraced that issue.

They should poll it again next week, but it's a bad sign for Weiner that Weiner is losing the runoff before the news came out. Maybe Weiner should get out of the way and give Thompson a real shot.

But this behavior continued after his resignation from Congress.
It's a sexual addiction, and I fear he'd do it while Mayor, requiring another resignation.
