Trayvon’s Parents: Obama’s Remarks A ‘Beautiful Tribute’

Source: TPM/NBC

"We are deeply honored and moved that President Obama took the time to speak publicly and at length about our son, Trayvon. The President’s comments give us great strength at this time. We are thankful for President Obama’s and Michelle’s prayers, and we ask for your prayers as well as we continue to move forward.

We know that the death of our son Trayvon, the trial and the not guilty verdict have been deeply painful and difficult for many people. We know our family has become a conduit for people to talk about race in America and to try and talk about the difficult issues that we need to bring into the light in order to become a better people.

What touches people is that our son, Trayvon Benjamin Martin, could have been their son. President Obama sees himself in Trayvon and identifies with him. This is a beautiful tribute to our boy.

Trayvon’s life was cut short, but we hope that his legacy will make our communities a better place for generations to come. We applaud the President’s call to action to bring communities together to encourage an open and difficult dialogue. Our family is committed to this dialogue through the work of the Trayvon Martin Foundation.

We seek a future when a child can walk down the street and not worry that others see him as dangerous because of the color of his skin or the clothes on his back. We seek a future where our children can grow up and become the people God intended them to be."

I don't believe a word out of Zimmerman's mouth.
Zimmerman was losing the fight he started, got scared, and did the cowardly thing.

And HOW MANY people had heard Zimmerman screaming often enough to be able to testify in court it was him they heard? That's just bizarre.

testify? This whole thing smells of a setup, with collusion from the prosecutors in this case.

PBO's talking about Trayon could have been him 35 years ago. Remarking that his parents have "dealt with the entire situation with incredible grace and dignity".

Anything we can do to give them "strength" at their time of great sorrow, as they're looking forward..

"We seek a future when a child can walk down the street and not worry that others see him as dangerous because of the color of his skin or the clothes on his back. We seek a future where our children can grow up and become the people God intended them to be."

The Trayvon Martin Foundation has been posted on DU.. a beautiful Mission Statement..

of what we all should be. Patient, generous, steadfast, and always gracious and calm. I don't know how they find the strength to be all that. They remind me of Jackie Robinson in a way, who knew he had no margin whatsoever for showing the extent of his frustration and pain. He had to be cool even under extreme duress. If Tracy and Sybrina acted out or said aloud some of the words that surely must have crossed their mind, the Right would point at them and say, "Just look at these out of control black people." Nothing is fair here. Nothing. Sending them all my love and hugs.

Through all of this they have handled themselves with such grace. May they take a small measure of comfort in the fact that literally millions of people have taken them, their son, and the injustice in this case into their hearts and minds.

post the article on who Trayvon really was from his teachers, friends, teammates and coaches. It is a totally different person than what the Defense portrayed in the media. This is a kid that volunteered to help other kids at social events. It is totally different than what was portrayed in the media or by rightwing media outlets. The prosecution probably knew this and never humanized Trayvon Martin.

Good.

This statement shows that there is a least some remnant of the person I twice voted - very reluctantly the second time - for as president.

Now if this Nobel Peace Prize winning president would just quite sending drones to kill people in the Third World, if he would recognize that American citizens have Constitutional rights which cannot be - well, which *should* not be - abrogated by his will, if he would bring justice to those who committed war crimes in the name of the American people and to those who looted the economy, if he would not collude with those who bring us Fascism in the name of Freedom - in short, if he would stand up for ANY liberal values, then I might regain a measure of respect for this president who has done as much to destroy civil liberty in this country as any single president in history.

I will not be holding my breath. None-the-less, I am pleased that he was able to speak up and admit that racism is alive and well in this country - oddly, most so in the most God Fearing parts of our nation.

Why Obama chose the path of darkness and repression, when he could easily have been one of our greatest presidents is a question for the historians. He really had to work hard to blow it, but he did.
