UN General Assembly condemns Syria

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly has approved a resolution backing an Arab League plan that calls for Syria's president to step down and strongly condemns human rights violations by his regime.

The vote in the 193-member world body was 137-12 with 17 abstentions.

Russia and China, who vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, voted against the resolution.

There are no vetoes in the General Assembly and while their resolutions are not legally binding, they do reflect world opinion on major issues.

Supporters were hoping for a high "yes" vote to deliver a strong message to Assad to immediately end all human rights violations and attacks on civilians and hand power to his vice-president.

1. That is nowhere near the majority of UN GA condemnation of US for its embargo against Cuba,

which was passed for 20 years in a row, the most recently with 186-2-3 count. The two against?
US, of course, and Micronesia. All US allies (even Israel) voted in favor. Didn't seem to deliver "strong",
or any, message to the US though.

2. Though it is not a binding resolution, it's nice to see the 137-12 vote backing the Arab League plan

"Russia and China, who vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, voted against the General Assembly measure along with North Korea, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and others who heeded Syria's appeal to vote "no."'
