U.S. Military Plan to Arm Rebels Includes No-Fly Zone in Syria

Source: WSJ

WASHINGTON—A U.S. military proposal for arming Syrian rebels also calls for a limited no-fly zone inside Syria that would be enforced from Jordanian territory to protect Syrian refugees and rebels who would train there, according to U.S. officials.

Asked by the White House to develop options for Syria, military planners have said that creating an area to train and equip rebel forces would require keeping Syrian aircraft well away from the Jordanian border.

To do that, the military envisages creating a no-fly zone stretching up to 25 miles into Syria which would be enforced using aircraft flown from Jordanian bases and flying inside the kingdom, according to U.S. officials.

As a pro-Assad militia leader explained that the driving philosophy behind the current operations in Banyas and its surroundings is to “cleanse and liberate” the only coastal town in Syria where Sunnis make up a majority, and as hundreds of Sunni families are indeed being forced to flee.

1. Sad and pathetic. The rebels used chems too ...but that's ok cause the chems came from Al-Nusra...

2. Well at least that should keep Israeli jets out too.

Notice it says "calls for" and "would be enforced using aircraft flown from Jordanian bases" but doesn't say exactly who will fly the aircraft to enforce the zone.

4. Good luck with that; I doubt they'd fly "unprotected'

As soon as they turn on the power, they'd get hit. IMO of course.

6. Which would be a very dangerous situation

Syria is certainly going to claim it has the right to 'turn on the power' of anti-aircraft installations in its own territory; if the USA tries to destroy them at that stage, it's a direct, unprovoked, attack on a sovereign nation. Your way, the USA would be starting a war.

The USA would be on slightly better ground, in international law, if it waited for the missiles to lock on to an American aircraft while it was still outside Syria. Syria will have to tread carefully, if the US is going to put planes right up against the border.

8. If the Syrians managed to capture some American soldiers, I think that increase chance of peace.

That's the sad situation. The elitist scum sitting in Washington plan these things like there's no blood price. There is. 9/11 was the blood price of Reagan's crimes.
