Feds Want Power Grid Plans for Solar Flares

Source: Courthouse News Service

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has directed electrical grid regulators to address the impact of solar flares on electrical grid operation, according to a new regulation.

The FERC is requiring the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) to submit reliability standards that would help protect the power grid from failure in case of a major "geomagnetic disturbance."

Geomagnetic disturbances are caused by "space weather," a term used to describe changes in plasma, magnetic fields, radiation and other matter that is carried through space by solar winds. Geomagnetic disturbances are sometimes called solar flares, which are related to the disturbances.

The FERC, under the direction of the Department of Energy and the Federal Power Act, asked the NERC to implement its directive in two parts. First, the NERC has six months from the rule's effective date to submit "one or more reliability standards that require owners and operators of the bulk-power system to develop and implement operational procedures to mitigate the effects of geomagnetic disturbances consistent with the reliable operation of the bulk-power system," according to the FERC's action.

The second stage gives the NERC 18 months to develop one or more reliability standards that require owners and operators of facilities connected to the power grid to conduct initial and "on-going" assessments of the potential impact of "benchmark" geomagnetic disturbances on their equipment and on the grid as a whole.

1. Oooh...Big Gubermint.......

Of course we should have plans to deal with solar flares. There is an underlying assumption that the grid will be stable and provide consistent, available electricity. The reality is that certain solar flares will impact or depredate the integrity of our electric grid. This is a wise precaution to deal with what WILL not IF happen.

3. Not even will; it's happened at least three times (1859, 1921 and 1989). (nt)

4. The NRC is also considering the problem of solar flares

IEEE Spectrum pointed out it could result in "Hundreds of Fukushimas".

7. So I read that link, Bananas, and it's like OMG!

And a problem I realized is that the chances of a backup system having a hiccup and failing is very high. Especially during any natural event like an earthquake or flood or solar flare.

Other power supply systems don't need such backups, so it seems the only smart decision is to close down all the nuke plants, ASAP, eh? What do you think?

2. but, but, but how can a celestial body have any impact on earth?

Uncle Sam is MOONING the anti-astrology Poo-flinging Scientific Materialists something wicked with this skeme. Materialisters better respond immediately with Feerocious Fits of Poutrage before our tacks dollars get investurd in this wHackO scheme for reckoning with so-called "celestial inflewences."

5. I, for one, don't believe in these solar flares. Sounds like that phony "Climate change" thing.

9. It's about time.

There are people that have been trying to get visibility for this kind of thing for years.

The utilities are against it because they'd have to buy EMP-hardened gear, and keep extra parts on hand, which screw up the books. Especially since some of those parts go for millions of dollars.

So few people are willing to pay to have backup plans or better infrastructure. Especially if they're for-profit/publicly traded.

One bad solar storm hits at the right time, at the right angle with the magnetic field in the right position, and they'll set transformers on the East/West coast on fire. The smaller ones in the middle would probably survive, but could still be damaged.
