It's over: Boston bombing suspect captured alive, police say
Source: MSNBC
The Boston Marathon bombing suspect was captured alive Friday night after police found him in a boat in a suburban backyard following a bloody rampage and daylong manhunt, law enforcement sources said.
Cheers went up from a crowd of police gathered at the scene in Watertown, Mass., where bursts of gunfire had been heard over the course of two hours.
The dramatic turn of events ended five days of terror from the bombing at the marathon finish line, which killed three people, wounded 176 and left the city of Boston on edge.

Blanket anti-death penalty. State shouldn't kill its cititzens. Among the MANY reasons which have been discussed here many times over the years, death penalty kills innocent people.
Dyedinthewoolliberal
(15,546 posts)and as a whole side issue of discussion to this whole thing, the death penalty is merely revenge and doesn't change anything. Put another way, how does killing somebody for killing somebody teach us not to kill somebody?
enough destruction and death already.

Use of capital punishment by country:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_of_capital_punishment_by_country
90% of the world's countries are not executing, according to Amnesty International.
100 (51%) have abolished it.
7 (4%) retain it for crimes committed in exceptional circumstances (such as in time of war).
49 (25%) permit its use for ordinary crimes, but have not used it for at least 10 years and are believed to have a policy or established practice of not carrying out executions, or it is under a moratorium.
39 (20%) maintain the death penalty in both law and practice. These countries make up approximately 66% of the world's population in 2012.[1]

(2,730 posts)being tried in Texas. I think he should be given a fair Trial, including any mitigating circumstances that could have been involved. Why was the youngest Beltway sniper allowed to live? From everything I have heard so far, this kid had good character, until this. I think we should hear the evidence. He is 19 years old. He gave up also. All we know is he helped his brother plant the bombs. Forgive me if I don't feel so bloodthirsty and consider this a possible tragedy. Maybe this kid can be salvaged.

(53,661 posts)There there will be a price that he will have to be paid. This was too great to be excused. MA may put him away for life. I am glad he is in the hospital and will likely recover. People deserve to know what this was about, the kind of lamebrained reasoning for this cruel act. But I don't see him as ever walking free again, not after all of this. And for that I feel no shame.

(4,110 posts)And then there's the punitive, punishing, revengeful kind of justice. I'm with you/

(13,141 posts)I didn't have the words to describe what I was thinking of,
when it comes to compassionate justice.. but it is that which,
in nature, restores balance to the whole.
Whatever is good for the whole, to restore equilibrium.
This in human society requires compassion.

He gave up? Yeah, after shooting twenty rounds from the boat at the police.
He should get a fair trial and then the death penalty.

(82,383 posts)Not execution; I am against the death penalty. But his life cannot be salvaged.
It is possible he will defend claiming he didn't know what was in the backpack, but then other evidence might contradict that.
Maybe he'll be able to mitigate with the claim his brother was the main instigator and threatened/co-erced him.

(1,741 posts)You are going too far. I'm mainly anti-death penalty just because our justice system makes far too many mistakes right now (see Innocence Project). But many reasonable people in this country, even many reasonable Democrats are pro-death penalty, at least for the most heinous cases. There is a man in my state who committed the most awful crime - I don't even want to speak of it. Google Steven Smith or Autumn Carter if you're brave enough. There will always be criminals who make even the staunchest anti-DPers say, "In this monster's case, I'd make an exception," (whether or not they would actually act on that). I can't judge anyone who wishes the death of a person who hurt so many innocent people.

the federal death penalty exists, and if under process of law, there is nothing wrong with wishing it on the defendant in the event the defendant is found guilty in a trial conducted under law.

(149 posts)Suspect captured alive but injured, transported to a hospital, most likely the same local hospital where one of his victims is now a patient in stable condition after last night's operation, and after that officer's surgery. It is the closest hospital, within about a mile of the location of apprehension of this suspect.
Of course, they MIGHT take him to a hospital where none of his victims is hospitalized, another 5 miles away.

(101,266 posts)The carjacking victim was released unharmed at a gas station in Cambridge, sources said. He told police the brothers said they were the marathon bombers and had just killed a campus officer.
As the duo sped in his car toward Watertown, a police chase ensued and they tossed explosive devices out the window, officials said.
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/04/20/17823265-we-got-him-boston-bombing-suspect-captured-alive?lite
The identification of him as the person the police chased is pretty definite. "It's over" refers to the situation of having an armed and dangerous man somewhere in the city, not the investigation.

(149 posts)They had no money, and took an ATM card from the guy they carjacked, just to get $800 from an ATM.
They were NOT part of a well-financed foreign influx of terrorists.
This was not some sort of a well thought out plan. When they had been identified on camera, they panicked, took all their weapons and bombs and tried to run, committing a carjacking and run on ATM's to get the money to finance the run.
Smart terrorists have an escape plan that is not this crazy. They have associates and can hide from police, not hang out for days after just literally two miles away from their crime scene in a major city where they are already known, where they are licensed drivers, where they went to school and college.
Unlikely but possible, there may be one or two more of these crazed fanatics, outliers somewhere in America, but let's hope they never act. The example of these two may serve as a great deterrent to any few others that might be out there.
