Romney: Dragged-out primary will impact general election fundraising

Politico

Mitt Romney, in an interview with the Scott Hennen radio show, suggested the Republicans will suffer a fundraising shortfall if the GOP nomination fight drags out:

"Most likely, the party regulars will surround one of the people who they think has the best chance of beating Barack Obama, and start raising money for the general election. Of course, he’s doing that already. He and the Democratic Party have raised some $200 million. Of course, each of the four of us that are still in the race are raising money for our primaries. So at some point, we’ll have to pick our person and start raising money so we can compete with Barack Obama. Otherwise, we’ll be massively outspent.”

Gee Mitt, if it's a problem, I can think of something you could do...

It is possible that all the money he claims to have raised has actually been his own, funneled through other people. If that is the case, he could go broke.

If all the money he is spending is his own, funneled through others, then maybe he shouldn't be running.

Do NOT allow yourself to be complacent, whether this is BS or for real.

Even so, it is hardly a bad thing to see money being spent (ie - squandered) by the truckload now, when they'd much rather be saving it up to hit Obama. You casino owners and brother-acts and pirates and other assorted vulture capitalists - go ahead and unload a king's ransom this month! They're still slugging it out! Unload another king's ransom next month! Keep spending! There'll be that much less to lavish on the final horserace this fall.

Let 'em spend. Who knows? Maybe some of them might possibly be spent out before it really counts, if ego gets far enough in the way! After all, even the most controlling among them stop for a moment every so often and assess return-on-investment. "How much am I spending?" "How much have I spent so far?" "Oh really? That much?" It's an interesting visualization exercise, anyway...

I don't think it's the money that he's worried about. He doesn't want to drag out the primary because he knows that more nasty things will be said about him. Newt doesn't heed St. Ronnie's "Never speak ill of a fellow Republican" 11th commandment, so the dirt will be flying around and, of course, we will all be taking notes.....

People will be so damned burned out on Rmoney ads everywhere it will backfire. Besides, all he can say is "Obama has done nothing for the economy" and people are experiencing a disconnect between Rmoney's message and their lives.
