Ted Cruz Surprises Sandy Hook Victim's Daughter With Telephone Call

Source: Fox

The daughter of the Sandy Hook Elementary School principal who died in the mass killing in December could not join others from her community this week to lobby for gun control.

So she turned to Twitter to reach out to the 15 senators who indicated they would engage in a filibuster to block legislation on gun control. She said she just wanted them to vote, not put roadblocks in the way of debate and voting.

Only one of the senators called Erica Lafferty after her tweet – Ted Cruz.
===
He first offered condolences for her loss, calling the shooting “an unspeakable tragedy,” the paper said.

“I think, at the end, we agreed to disagree,” Lafferty is quoted as saying in the Times. “I think I stumped him a bit. I made my point that the purpose of being in Congress is to debate and to vote. And that is what his state elected him to do. Not to hide behind a filibuster. That is not doing his job.”
===
During the roughly 20-minute conversation, Cruz said that he preferred more prosecution of criminals and better rules concerning involuntary commitment for people who are mentally ill.

A Cruz spokeswoman told reporters: “He is glad they had the chance to speak and it was a respectful conversation.”

12. doubt it but

think would hope this kills the idea of filibuster abuse. Since it helps no one. Debate is very helpful in this country.. No debate everyone gets lazy..

19. Thank YOU!

Just what I was thinking. I just finished reading a number of accounts of the victims and their families and it was just to sad to bear.

4. I think he's just running to be the King of the Tea Baggers.

They'd see his phone call as some sort of courageous act rather than the slap in the face (my gun rights trump your gun grief) that it was intended to be.

Real Americans all.

5. Cruz will pull a fast one.

Brag about how "compassionate" he is, but put an anonymous hold on the bill or something.

But I still hope that Ms. Lafferty found some small comfort in him reaching out to her.

9. Dear Founding Fathers, you screwed us with this goddam second amendment.

WTF were you thinking? Some of your compromises leave me cold. I could say the same of my current president.

17. No, the 5-man conservative SCOTUS majority screwed us with their crazy reading of the 2nd Am.

Their 2008 Heller decision went against precedent, history and against the plain meaning of the Constitution. The 2nd Amendment was put in the Constitution by our Founding Fathers to protect us from standing armies by creating a citizen's militia, what would be our modern day National Guard. Of course, we ignored that and have a standing army. There is an excellent discussion of that in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022524696

The 2nd Am. is an anachronism, but the fact that it still sits there in the Constitution has allowed it to be commandeered by the right and gun manufacturers to sell guns.

24. The founding fathers gave us the supreme court...

I know the history of the 2nd amendment.. it was a compromise. Most compromises in our constitution were a result of slavery, which clashed with the "all men are created equal" meme.
I respect our founders and what they endured to separate from England. It was a bloody war with atrocities on both sides, something never discussed. After winning the war, the founders got together to form a government protecting the interests of the wealthy, leaving out women and, of course, slaves and former slaves.
Personally, I think we need a new Constitutional Convention.. like Iceland. Our constitution is outdated, which would be ok if so many Americans didn't take every word so literally, like they do the Bible.

14. What everyone else said, plus: he makes a dumb argument.

During the roughly 20-minute conversation, Cruz said that he preferred more prosecution of criminals and better rules concerning involuntary commitment for people who are mentally ill.

Why not that AND background checks, Ted?

25. Don't Blame Me For Ted Cruz

Don't blame me for Ted Cruz. I thought that my Texas deserved a REAL US senator that would serve to further the interests of the voters who put him into office, not a right-wing Tea Party ideologue. That's why I voted for Democratic candidate Paul Sadler in the 2012 general election.

Paul Sadler would have been a far better choice for Texas than the obstructionist Tea-bagger we've got now. Unfortunately, the majority of active Texas voters continues to suffer the delusion that Republican politicians will serve their interests and concerns and ignores the fact that they serve the big boys and high-rollers that finance their political campaigns.
