Connecticut Gun Bill Signed Into Law By Gov. Dannel Malloy

WASHINGTON -- Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) signed a sweeping new set of gun control reforms on Thursday, less than 12 hours after the Connecticut state legislature approved the legislation in a late-night session.
In a signing ceremony at the state capitol, Malloy called the event profoundly moving, and said Connecticut had come together in a way that few places were able to do.

The bill requires background checks for nearly all private gun sales, and bans the sale of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. It also expands the state's assault weapons ban to include scores of new gun models. These provisions will go into effect immediately, Malloy said, while others will be phased in.
The bill also includes new registration requirements for those who already own high-capacity magazines, and creates the nation's first dangerous weapon offender registry. In a move that many legislators applauded Wednesday night, the bill allocates at least $15 million more for school safety and mental health monitoring programs.

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has signed into law some of the countrys tightest gun restrictions in response to Decembers shooting massacre at a Newtown school.
Malloy signed the bill at a ceremony Thursday alongside family members of some of the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, several hours after it won approval in the General Assembly.
The bill passed 26-10 in the Senate and 105-44 in the House of Representatives. Both were bipartisan votes.
In some senses I hope this is an example to the rest of the nation, Malloy said. Certainly to our leaders in Washington who seem so deeply divided about an issue such as universal background checks, where the country is not divided itself.

(56,828 posts)in both houses, so they don't have to worry about Republicans... so, Republicans sometimes go with what's popular so they won't seem out of step and can appear moderate if they ever run for higher office ("see, I'm moderate, I voted for gun control."

(30,252 posts)...well, one of the toughest gun-control states in the nation.
I'm still scratching my head over the magazine registry. Is this going to turn into some sort of permit system?
