La. sinkhole now 10 acres

Officials monitoring the Assumption parish sinkhole say that when the massive slurry "burped" again Sunday morning, nearly one acre of the Cajun land environment fell into it, meaning that it has now consumed approximately ten acres of the parish.
"Nearly an acre of land fell off into the west side of the sinkhole, according to Assumption OEP director John Boudreaux," WBRZ reports about the ongoing Bayou Corne sinkhole disaster that began nine months ago.
With the monster's latest belch, Boudreaux said that more debris and hydrocarbons appeared at the surface of the collapsing area.

The sinkhole is above the collapsing 1-mile by 3-mile collapsing Napoleonville Salt Dome. The dome is under Grand Bayou and parts of Bayou Corne communities.
Explosive methane is lurching beneath the Bayou Corne community. It has been detected as far away as two miles from the sinkhole. Explosions could occur there any minute, according to human rights advocate Erin Brockovich, who recently visited the area.

(16,838 posts)they have a hurricane? Will the hole get bigger? Will the slurry from the sinkhole wash up on land? This might become a massive disaster.

(6,908 posts)Assumption Parish is not in much danger from a hurricane. But the danger from a collapsing salt dome or methane gas is very real.
