Jerry Brown blasts GOP on climate change
Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, had the Republican Party - and the 2012 presidential race - in his sights Thursday when he blasted what he called the "skepticism, the denial and the cultlike behavior of political lemmings that would take us over the cliff" on the key issue of climate change.
"We have an entire political party that is in absolute denial" regarding the human impacts on greenhouse gases, Brown told the Governor's Conference on Extreme Climate Risks and California's Future at a conference at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. The event included former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Virgin Airlines founder Richard Branson and U.N. climate-change Chairman Rajendra Pachauri.
Republican Schwarzenegger, asked what he would advise presidential candidates about climate change, said, "Let's not be narrow-minded. Let's not villainize. ... California is 40 percent more energy efficient than the rest of the country. So I tell the people in Washington, 'You don't have to have any debates. Just follow California.' "
