U.S. government's H-1B visa list shows accelerating demand from offshore outsourcers
February 14, 2013 03:28 PM ET
Computerworld - WASHINGTON -- The largest single users of H-1B visas are offshore outsourcers, many of which are based in India, or, if U.S. based, have most employees located overseas, according to government data obtained and analyzed by Computerworld.
The analysis comes as supporters of the skilled-worker visa program are trying to hike the H-1B cap to 300,000. Supporters of the raised cap, though, face opposition from critics who contend that H-1B visas undermine American tech workers and shouldn't be expanded.
Based on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) data analyzed, the major beneficiaries of the proposed increase in the cap would be pure offshore outsourcing firms.
Most of the largest H-1B users easily account for more than 35,000 H-1B visas under the "initial" visa plan, which includes new H-1B visa holders or those who work second concurrent jobs with a different employer. H-1B visa holders who change employers altogether are not counted as new approvals. The government data could also include visa applications filed in 2011 but not approved until 2012.

And these SOB's want to raise it to 300,000?
This is purely to drive down the wages of the US Engineer.
There are more than enough un-employed or under-employed
US engineers to easily cover 300,000.
Unfortunately, the US engineer won't accept a position for 40%
of the prevailing wage.
I say tie the H1-B Cap to the unemployment rate for engineers.
If the unemployment rate lowers, then H1-B Cap could go up.
If the unemployment rate goes up, then the H1-B Cap should go down.

This basically shows how to get H1B work for foreign engineers.
I have no problem with those that want to work in this country but it does exactly what you mention.
Lower wages for them and disqualifies technical workers that can't find jobs right now, especially those over 50 yrs old.
I got into IT about 25 yrs ago and my wages never matched the H1-B employees that came from India and I worked side by side with them.
It's just not fair and these companies that cry they can't find quality workers here are lying. They don't want to pay someone like me with 25 yrs experience a livable wage with benefits now that I'm older and don't forget - FEMALE. Fuck it I gave up looking.

(3,270 posts)I have to laugh at these so called "immigration lawyers" coming on these threads stating how urgent it is that we recruit from offshore, to supply employees to fields that already have a large percentage in the unemployment line. It's not about getting quality workers to fill vacant positions... it's about reducing costs and maximizing profits. Anyone that believes otherwise, is most likely sheared for wool and believes FOX reports news.

(3,927 posts)Someone who was an awesome progressive & friend.....and who went from being an incredibly successful consultant for specific software programs (I have to admit I never did fully understand what she did but I knew her for many years, saw how hard she worked under very lucrative contracts in her highly specialized field) to struggling for contracts and seeing the pay for the fewer ones she could get cut severely.....all thanks to the influx of H-1B visa holders sought by the American corporations she had done the work for.
Any representative supporting increasing H-1B visas will be hearing from me or have already. I have to do it in her name -- she was an incredibly involved progressive and would have been doing the same if she was here.

(3,927 posts)Te toll all of this takes on people is what too many politicians, including those "bipartisan" supporters of anything that increases money going to foreigners who are either forced into working for next to nothing or who train with a goal of getting a better job here but for substantially lower pay that then necessitates OUR pros to take massive remuneration cuts.....it's all sick and so effing wrong!
I'm so sorry about your brother. Hr sounds like a guy full of compassion & sensitivities that led to him struggling. You have to have a heart and give a damn about people for it to affect you like that....that's something the heartless ReTHUGS will never get.
