Etch A Sketch creator André Cassagnes dies at age 86

Source: MSN

It's a sad day for doodlers everywhere. André Cassagnes, the inventor of the Etch A Sketch, has died outside Paris. He was 86. Cassagnes came up with the idea in the 1950s for what ultimately became one of the world's most well-known toys; the Etch A Sketch was first sold as a manufactured toy during the holiday season of 1960. Larry Killgallon, the president of Ohio Art Co., which first manufactured the Etch A Sketch, said Cassagnes' invention "brought joy to so many over such a long period of time." As a tribute, check out our gallery of 30 amazing images done on Etch A Sketches. We have a feeling André would be proud.

Inspired millions of artistically-inclined, and not-so-artistically-inclined kids to express themselves.

RIP, Andre.

... and discovered it was full of aluminum powder.

We rubbed this powder all over my little brother's face and hands, wrapped him up in foil, put a metal bucket on his head, and called him the Tin Man.

My mother was not pleased.

Same little brother is now an artist and he can do some pretty amazing drawings on an Etch A Sketch.

Thanks for the memories, André Cassagnes.

Of course he ended up loving it (once he realized what the white knobs were really for), and all my kids tried making their Etch A Sketches all black in order to see all the gears -- just like I had done when I was their age. Good times!

RIP André Cassagnes

that when he died he would have left last requests with his family for precise instructions
about what to do after the ceremony
...well, that would be best not shaken up.

Rest in peace Andre. It's amazing what a person's mind can invent and somebody can get rich off of. (like the Pet rock).

Did he also invent that other thing- put a beard on the person's face?
or the one where you use a pencil type object on a filmy paper then life
Same concept

and ConspiracyTheoriests love Etch a sketch to draw and come up with their own conclusions.
they were able to actually draw the end of the breadcrumb trail and lead it right to where the conclusion was they wanted it to be led too and all proud that they uncovered a conspiracy, they ran and went to show others what they clearly saw
Til reality came and they bumped into something, and the trail disappeared.

and humor.

BTW Andy and Buzz and Woody and the rest of the gang are crying for their departed friend.
(toy story reference).

A perspective drawing. The artist had to patiently turn both knobs to draw all those diagonals.
