EDMONTON - Nurses at the Devonshire Care Centre in south Edmonton went on strike Monday, seeking wages and benefits closer to those of their counterparts elsewhere in the province.
“It’s just not fair to be working the same and not being paid what is appropriate for us,” says Helen Lichtner, who has been a part-time RN at Devonshire since 2009. “In the whole province, we are the lowest-paid.”
Delia Mejilla, another RN who has worked at the facility since 2003, says part-time nurses like her get no benefits from Devonshire’s owners. She was on the picket line Monday afternoon with a walker, because she recently had surgery.
Nurses and their supporters carried signs that read “Let Us Care for our Residents” and “Liar, Liar, Devonshire” as they picketed Monday in front of the facility at 1808 Rabbit Hill Road.
