GOP eyes redistricting in Ohio and Texas as it looks to bolster slim majority

Source: Yahoo! News/The Hill

Republicans are eyeing potential redistricting opportunities in Ohio and Texas as they seek extra cushion to protect their thin majority in the House next year. In Ohio, redistricting laws mandate a redraw ahead of 2026 because the last map passed without bipartisan support. And in Texas, redistricting could be added to an upcoming special session agenda as the White House reportedly pushes the Lone Star State to consider redrawing to protect the party’s numbers.

Defending a narrow 220-212 majority, Republicans are bracing for a competitive election cycle as they look to defy traditional headwinds typically associated with the president’s party in midterm years.

“I think the Speaker and party leadership look at even a handful of districts as really important, particularly if the natural trend — given the president’s popularity at this point and given historic midterm conditions — means that the Republican Party starts out assuming they’re going to lose a couple districts right off the bat,” said Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Marymount University who founded the database “All About Redistricting.”

“Ohio is going to have to redraw, one way or the other. Texas is mulling whether to redraw. And there are a lot of competing pressures.”

I know for a fact that for decades the Republic Party was over represented here. When Dems held a 3 to 2 margin in voter registrations the Republics were handed 4 of the 8 House seats. When the Republics gerrymandered Texas, Ohio, Florida, PA, Wisconsin and others before and especially after the 2010 midterms the Democrats here decided to fight fire with fire. I dislike gerrymandering but trying to play fair with devious Republics is foolish.

I am in nutcase Doc Andy Harris's district that was bought for him by the Club for Growth. Andy is a former doc who has voted against expanding healthcare time after time. I believe he took the Hypocritical rather than the Hippocratic oath. Now he is the head honcho of the Far Right Freedom Caucus. Unfortunately, his mostly rural district is his for life because the morons who vote for him every two years continue to vote against their self interest.

The Republic Party in MD pouts and complains about Democratic one party rule, but there is one party rule in many red states and that suits them just fine. Most of the Republics in the legislature are MAGAs who worship draft dodger president Bone Spurs Their goal for Maryland is to turn it red. I pray that never happens.

Not sure if additional tweaks to the congressional maps will result in more R seats or just produce more districts that aren't exactly safe for Rs.

to redraw the maps at least twice since 2016. The r majority ignored the ruling. gym jordan's district is one of the worst offenders of gerrymandering in the U.S. It is shaped like a duck:

People who are not rwnj are disenfranchised and losing more ground every election. The Ohio supreme court is now ruled by rwnj judges who are in step with the rw agenda. I'm a life-long resident of this state and it wasn't like this until rw radio and other crap poisoned the residents.

RW radio, Saint Ronnie the Dim-Witted, George W. (My goofy dog is smarter than you)Bush and his simplistic bullshit and then the big one…a Black guy elected president.

I am in deep red Portage County. There are still Trump/Vance/Moreno signs up.

has been red as long as I can remember. I can remember when it was one of the only counties in s.e. Ohio that voted for r's. I lived in Monroe County when I noticed. Now, the only county in s.e. Oh. that votes blue is Athens County.

If any of the rw candidates had a signle shred of decency or integrity, I wouldn't hate this all so much. But they've offered dregs for years and each election cycle, their candidates suck even more.

I drove through Portage County last summer. Pretty area.
