Democrats were left dumbfounded Thursday after President Donald Trump twisted a deadly plane crash catastrophe into an opportunity to attack diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Lawmakers found no shortage of words to describe Trump’s reaction, calling it “grotesque and outrageous,” “downright disgusting,” “disgraceful,” “absolutely shameful,” “despicable,” “absolutely vile,” “racist and sexist,” “a betrayal,” “monstrous,” “simply un-American,” “craven” and “pathetic.”

The deadly midair crash near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., killed 67 people, including three soldiers on board the Black Hawk helicopter that collided with the passenger plane.

“Listen, it’s one thing for internet pundits to spew off conspiracies, it’s another for the president of the United States to throw out idle speculation as bodies are still being recovered and families are still being notified,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement. “It just turns your stomach.”

The Sunday talk shows will have this tragedy dominate the shows and the following Friday will be the January jobs number. With this weeks release of initial jobless claims setting a record the jobs report will contrast poorly to the 229,000 jobs added by Biden in December. His headaches are just starting. And with this as a backdrop, Trump faces the debt ceiling/government shutdown facing him in March. On top of that, egg prices are expected to go up another 20 percent and today gas prices locally hit about a 2 year high. Now, if that isn't bleak, I don't know what is. Incidentally, DEI did not start under Biden. DEI started under Obama and Trump left it in place for his earlier 4 years in office - called out in his presser.

As the morning progressed, the White House announced that the president would offer additional public remarks on the tragedy, which offered Trump an opportunity to do what he failed to do overnight. Instead, he made matters vastly worse. As NBC News reported:

President Donald Trump targeted former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in his remarks on the deadly D.C. plane crash, saying Biden’s “policy was horrible.”

To be sure, expectations were low ahead of the Republican’s public remarks on the disaster. Trump hasn’t exactly earned a reputation for excellence when it comes to post-tragedy responses.

But the incumbent president failed to clear a low bar....

Asked if the crash was caused by diversity hiring, the president said, “It just could have been.”

A reporter pressed Trump to explain how, exactly, he came to the conclusion that diversity had something to do with the crash. He replied,

So to recap, as recovery efforts continue, Trump responded to a deadly crash by blaming Democrats, DEI, the FAA, a former cabinet secretary, and unnamed pilots.
