Michigan Senate Passes "Abortion Mega-Bill"

Source: Mother Jones = Kate Sheppard Dec. 13, 2012

Michigan Republicans are going for broke this week, as the lame-duck session winds down in the state legislature. No sooner had state lawmakers successfully pushed through a new right-to-work bill when they advanced a grab bag of anti-abortion measures that has been called the "greatest assault on reproductive rights" in the state's history.

On Wednesday, the state Senate approved what has been called an "abortion mega-bill." HR 5711 includes measures requiring anyone providing more than 120 abortions per year to do so in facilities that meet the same standards as "ambulatory surgical centers"—a provision often referred to as "targeted regulation of abortion providers" (or TRAP), because they single out abortion providers for standards far stricter than other medical facilities. The building codes alone could shut down many abortion providers in the state.

Other provisions of the bill would require a doctor to be physically present to dispense the drugs used for a medication abortion, which would make it illegal to provide telemedicine abortions. It also implements new rules for the disposal of fetal remains that would require them to be treated like the body of a dead person, rather than treating them like other forms of medical waste.

Otherwise I'd say this week would guarantee any GOP candidate would have a hard time getting elected in Michigan for a long time to come.

and it's doing everything within its power to break the backs of people there.

It's unreal that this is happening at this pace.

But it provides a taste of what's in store for everyone should the GOP ever get control of all three branches of government at once.

Run the fuckers out of every single elected office and force them to close their state offices for good. Drive them out of the entire state.

Not only should Michigan declare that war, but all the other red states. Especially the right-to-work-for-less states. These poor residents don't even have a clue of what is about to transpire against them. It won't take long until they figure it out and I hope they can all get back the decent life they were promised, the life they USED to have. But as long as there's a republicon owned state, it's not going to happen. So get rid of the vermin and vote in the dems on every level.

FYI - There are no progressive republicons, but there are conservative democrats....

Snyder won office in part because he convinced people - even the Detroit Free Press editorial board - that he was a "moderate" and wouldn't support teh crazies. Now they're doubling down on divisive legislation in the lame duck session, and while it may take a while to roll back some of these laws, if I'm an "independent" voter in Michigan it's going to be a long, long time before I take at face value any GOP claims that sound like "trust me, I'm no extremist."

So while it looks bad right now, this could really be the seed for the complete collapse of GOP power at the state level within a few years.

I hope!
