South Carolina Gov. Haley Won’t Appoint Herself To Fill DeMint’s Seat

DAVID TAINTOR 9:42 AM EST, FRIDAY DECEMBER 7, 2012

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Halley said in a statement Friday she will not appoint herself to fill outgoing Sen. Jim DeMint's seat:

“Appointing a new member of the U.S. Senate is a solemn duty, and I take this responsibility with utmost seriousness. I will make this decision in a manner that is thoughtful and dignified, but also quickly.

“I want to make two things clear from the outset. Number one, I will not take the appointment myself. Number two, I will appoint a person who has the same philosophy of government that Jim DeMint and I share.

“With all the challenges we face as a state and nation, it is essential that the next senator from South Carolina be dedicated to the principles that our state most values.”

Speculation about who Haley, who is seen as a rising political star, might choose has included Republican Representative Tim Scott. Like Haley, Scott was elected in 2010 with support from the anti-big government Tea Party movement.

The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, reported that DeMint, who has been in the Senate since 2004, told Haley he wanted Scott named his successor. It cited sources close to DeMint for the story.

Scott, whose coastal district includes Charleston, has been one of the most conservative members of Congress. If appointed, he would be the first black senator from the South since the late 1800s.

Ouch. It'd be interesting to see if he could be elected in 2014, though, given the nature of the state's repuke base.

And do that shucky ducky, step and fetch it routine that Cain did and they'll vote him in a landslide. Nothing a racist loves more than a black guy that hates black people. It really makes them feel good about themselves and they can happily vote for them and say "see, I'm no racist!".

Watch what happens.
