Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free

Source: NBC News

By Michael Kosnar and Ryan J. Reilly
WASHINGTON — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to plead guilty as part of a plea deal with the U.S. Justice Department that will allow him to go free after spending five years in a British prison, according to court documents.

Assange was charged by criminal information — which typically signifies a plea deal — with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, the court documents say.

However, he would need one to get out of Australia and travel again.

If your passport has been revoked you can be returned to your home country. Remember he's doing a plea bargain and is being flown to the Mariana's on behalf of the US of govt. He likely will be transported to Australia on behalf of the US govt or Australian govt. He won't be released on a commercial flight to Australia. Passports aren't needed needed when someone is transported on behalf of two governments etc.

He's an Australian citizen. Australia has been pushing for his release for a long time, and he has a lot of public support here. The only ones here who don't support his release and return home is conservatives (though one crossed the floor to vote with the govt on a recent vote on the issue). As our government is a Labor one, and a former PM and current US ambassador accompanied Assange to court this morning, the chances of his passport being revoked is nil to zero.

He's landing in Canberra (that's where I live) this evening. I saw some DUers saying they'd like him to rot in a Russian hell hole. I can guarantee them that at this time of year, Canberra is colder than Siberia and because all the politicians work here, other parts of Australia usually refer to us a hell hole anyway

I was coming here to post this and saw you had it up. Here is one more paragraph I wanted to post.

Assange was charged by criminal information — which typically signifies a plea deal — with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, the court documents say. A letter from Justice Department official Matthew McKenzie to U.S. District Judge Ramona Manglona of the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands said that Assange would appear in court at 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday (or, 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday) to plead guilty and said that DOJ expects Assange will return to Australia, his country of citizenship, after the proceedings.

I really don't see how anyone can consider Assange a journalist.

I do know he almost singlehandedly started the Seth Rich rumor - that he had been murdered in a plot - which added to the accumulation of so-called evidence against Hillary Clinton and contributed to giving us President Trump** Don't believe me? Go to

and you can listen to it happen. The interview with Assange starts at roughly 3:40, but Issikof also talks to the interviewer, who was clearly taken aback. (also some background in the intruduction may refresh memories.)

Not a journalist. Just another grifter. Who might have paid him to stage that stunt? I think there are suggestions throughout the podcast episode.

Tue Jun 25, 2024, 02:11 AM
Jun 2024

Just a few details:

First, the reason the prosecution (which Obama's Admin refrained from for its harmful 1st Amendment implications) was even started was because of the Trump Administration's political desire to have Julian reveal his sources for the 2016 leaks to show they WEREN'T Russia. Journalist ethics (which do NOT militate against securing or revealing leaks) forbade such a revelation of sources

Second, even those who don't like him (blaming him for allegedly helping Trump in 2016 even as he was already holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy (a huge IMF loan to Ecuador was approved right when they evicted him) shd at least recognize the GENERAL threat to press freedom this case was, which is why ENTIRE mainstream media condemned to overall prosecution, even those who were critical of Julian

Some of the responses on DU belong on a hawk website not here -- even those who wrongly blame him for Trump's victory in 2016

the time already "served," even if that additional time had to be served elsewhere and had been minimal. Because the spin will be that he served no time/got away with it, etc.

That said, if one adds his reportedly-stinky self-selected seclusion in the embassy to his so-called "time served" while fighting extradition, he has been restricted or constrained in his whereabouts and worldly access for 12 years. That's not a life sentence in ADX Florence, but it's certainly something.

Thinking that revealing some of the underhanded behind closed doors government shenanigans the US government was doing at the time, would get them to change their ways to be more open and fair in their dealings with other countries.

The methodology to do so is questionable.

Has that worked? Probably not.
Hero or bad guy? Makes little difference now.

Julian will return to his home town of Townsville, Queensland and fade into obscurity.
Hopefully, with his wife and children.

37. Caged Bird By Maya Angelou
Tue Jun 25, 2024, 12:01 PM
Jun 2024

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

An excellent documentary on Julian Assange from a different country's perspective.

Hacking Justice

With a unique and independent access to a worldwide campaign and to the Ecuadorian embassy where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange found his refuge, the film witnesses the struggle for the control of information, the growing influence of intelligence services, the role of the mass media, and the difficult balance of individual rights and state security.
