US Senate Republicans block assault-style weapons ban as mass shootings rise

Source: Reuters

December 6, 20231:36 PM EST

WASHINGTON, Dec 6 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republicans moved to block a ban on assault-style weapons put forward by Democrats on Wednesday, as the United States recorded the highest number of mass shootings for the second year in a row.

The motion, put forward by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, would have reauthorized the Assault Weapons Ban, which first passed in 1994 and expired 10 years later.

The ban covers certain semi-automatic firearms and large capacity ammunition magazines, and ushered in a decrease of deaths from gun violence while it was in place. "The American people are sick and tired of enduring one mass shooting after another," Schumer said on Wednesday in a speech bringing the motion to the floor. "They’re sick and tired of vigils and moments of silence for family, friends, classmates, coworkers."

Republican Senator John Barasso blocked Schumer's attempt to reauthorize the ban by unanimous consent. "Americans have a Constitutional right to own a firearm," he said in a speech on the Senate floor, arguing that the bill was about "trying to label responsible gun owners as criminals."

Schumer had attempted this via the fast-track "Unanimous Consent" motion (which is how many non-controversial laws are passed) except if there is an "objection", which is what happened here, and then that means it would be required to go through regular order (cloture vote, debate/amendments, final vote, etc.).

Trump Extremists Demand Civil War, Mass Murder After New Indictment

Tom Dickinson
Rolling Stone, June 9, 2023

Extreme supporters of Donald Trump have met news of his federal indictment with visions of violence and retribution.

At The Donald, a forum for ultra-MAGA Trump supporters, users demanded public executions and other forms of lynching to avenge the federal prosecution of Trump, for the alleged mishandling of state secrets at Mar a Lago after he was no longer president.

The calls for violence appeared in comment threads, responding to posts on the front page of the forum Thursday night, after news broke of Trump’s latest legal troubles. The most extreme comments were written in response to a fanciful post insisting “the only solution” to DOJ’s efforts to lock up Trump would be to vote him back into the presidency, so Trump could “pardon himself and begin arresting those guilty of insurrection and sedition.”

A user named “Belac186” offered a far deadlier fix: “The only way this country ever becomes anything like the Constitution says this country should be is if thousands of traitorous rats are publicly executed.” Commenter “DogFaceKilla” quickly chimed in to offer supplies: “I got some rope somewhere in the garage…” And “Heavy_Metal_Patriot” added: “Hans says we can borrow the flammenwerfer” — a reference to a battlefield flame thrower used to by German soldiers in World War II.

The proposal for mass killing struck user “BlackPilledMAGA” as going too far: “Doesn’t have to be thousands, just a few dozen would do. Shit would STOP immediately.” But user “Nerdrem1” insisted taking out a few elites wouldn’t make the difference, suggesting the number of dead required was on a genocidal scale: “Millions. The real problem is the people that vote for them, as long as they exist the problem can’t be solved.” A user named “Heavy_Metal_Patriot” concurred: “Correct.”

Well possibly a though and pray.

The assault ban does not stop one from owning a firearm. So the MAGraT's can still stroke their gun.

The authors of the Second Amendment could have never foreseen the ultra efficient killing machines that are in use now. Gun humpers have been brainwashed into looking upon the Second Amendment as gospel, meanwhile our youth are being slaughtered by modern murder weapons. All so that the gun industry can earn a handsome profit.

Clearly there's an understanding here about not allowing mass destruction by private citizens. The only difference is now a majority want that option out there.

The NRA and Reagan of course had a completely different view when it was black people open carrying, so the poster's contention about purpose and optics of gun ownership, brandishing and use holds weight

It is no longer a Supreme Court, it is an Extreme Cult.

See, e.g.,
https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/20-843_7j80.pdf

Or, for a summary:

Thomas changed the test courts are to use when analyzing the constitutionality of such regulations. Only firearm regulations that are “consistent with this Nation’s historical tradition” comply with Second Amendment’s protections, he wrote, in an assertion that puts in jeopardy any restriction that does not have a historical parallel to the nation’s founding.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/23/politics/second-amendment-gun-rights-supreme-court-new-york-test/index.html

This "court" distorts the Constitution to suit its ideology, rather than following logic, law and precedent.

Democrats have attempted continually to get this in place, so by attempting a different tact of a renewal of what was an earlier, bipartisan bill that was allowed to expire, doing the "unanimous consent" puts on record who is blocking the removal of weapons of war out of the general public's hands.

There is a mass shooting almost every day in the US. What the media often ignores is how many people are injured in these shootings is the number of injured, many with lifelong injuries such as paralysis or other injuries causing major life disruptions. The visual shows both those killed as well as those injured. It is a chilling but effective visual.
