Nigeria hit by widespread blackout in 'total system collapse'
Source: BBC
Nigeria has been hit by widespread power cuts following a "total system collapse", electricity distribution companies say. Levels of power being generated fell to zero megawatts early on Thursday. Some supplies have been restored but only a tiny fraction of normal consumption in Africa's most populous country. Power supplies are often erratic in Nigeria, despite its role as a major oil and gas producer. Read more: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-66810202

1. My nephew was working in northern Nigeria a few years ago
He wasn't in Lagos, but rather up in the Hausa-speanking area, where Boko Haram was operating. Abuja and Kano. I'm glad he's out of there, although his current open-ended stint in Kyiv isn't exactly a security-filled improvement.

2. Wiki on Nigerian electricity generation
"The main source of electricity generation comes from fossil fuels especially gas which accounts for 86% of the capacity in Nigeria with the remainder generated from hydropower sources."

5. Nigeria restoring power after nationwide blackouts
Nigeria restoring power after nationwide blackouts (Reuters)
LAGOS (Reuters) -Nigeria's electricity distribution companies reported "a total system collapse" on Thursday after a fire on a major transmission line, causing widespread blackouts across Africa's biggest economy, before power slowly started to return.
Adebayo Adelabu, minister for power, said fire had caused an explosion on a transmission line connecting the Kainji and Jebba power plants in north central Niger state, tripping the grid. "The fire has been fully arrested and over half of the connections are now up and the rest will be fully restored in no time," Adelabu said in a statement. Power generation fell to zero in the early hours but had risen to 1,341 megawatts (MW) by 1400 GMT, still well below the daily average of 4,100 MW, data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) showed. https://news.yahoo.com/nigeria-power-grid-collapse-causes-104659024.html |
