San Francisco lawmakers vote to ban public nudity

Source: AP

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco lawmakers disappointed committed nudists on Tuesday by narrowly approving a ban on public nakedness despite concerns the measure would undermine the city's reputation as a sanctuary for free expression.

The Board of Supervisors voted 6-5 in favor of a public safety ordinance that prohibits exposed genitals in most public places, including streets, sidewalks and public transit. The law still must pass a final vote and secure Mayor Edwin Lee's signature to take effect early next year.

Supervisor Scott Wiener introduced the ban in response to escalating complaints about a group of men whose bare bodies are on display almost daily in the city's predominantly gay Castro District.

Mike Hunt probably co-authored the bill.

I can't even imagine people trying that up here in Maine. Not in public and certainly not outside. Brr.

Social rules should dictate that we give some consideration to... well, if not modesty, at least covering our more delicate parts. There's a time and a place... hell, there are even communities where you can wander around naked all you please. Should probably keep the clothes on in public places.

I lived in California for half a year or so. Seeing green grass and lovely roses in the winter was really something... but it was just too strange for me. The problem with heat is that you can only take off so many clothes before you're sitting around in your birthday suit. You can always put more on though. If I didn't need my hands more free for writing and typing, I'd be wearing gloves constantly. Oh well, the hooded sweater, three pairs of socks and my comforter will just have to do.

I've used that argument myself. Were we trained to think that way in grade school or something?

Do you want to sit on a chair or bench after a person with a bare ass has been sitting there? I don't! That's why, when my Pagan group has clothing-optional events, we tell those who are going clothing-optional to carry a towel with them to sit on.

Besides, it's been my experience that the people most likely to go clothing optional, shouldn't. I'm no prize, either, which is why I keep my clothes on at camping events.

especially when ::gasp:: penis is involved.

I'm not in favor of public nudity but only for myself. However we are a nation of prudes and puritans and I enjoy seeing them made uncomfortable by those who choose to bare it all. If I don't want to look at old man wang I can both avert my eyes or turn my head depending on what the situation calls for.

For those concerned with hygiene I assume none of you ever touch pubic door-nobs because the amount of fecal matter on them would blow your minds.

Then again maybe we should have a mandatory uniform for everyone I know a lot of people who find saggy pants deplorable and offensive.

But this should not be permitted in the city proper. There have to be limits.
