Boris Johnson stepping down as MP with immediate effect and says he is 'bewildered and appalled'
Source: The Guardian
... at being 'forced out' Boris Johnson is standing down as the Conservative MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, it has been reported. The move by the former prime minister will trigger an immediate by-election. He took the move after the Privileges Committee of the House of Commons reportedly found he misled Parliament & recommended sanction of more than 10 days. Johnson told the Times: “It is very sad to be leaving parliament - at least for now - but above all I am bewildered and appalled that I can be forced out, anti-democratically, by a committee chaired and managed, by Harriet Harman, with such egregious bias” Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2023/jun/09/conservatives-labour-rishi-sunak-keir-starmer-boris-johnson-honours-uk-politics-news Lib Dems react with just two words: Good riddance
Reacting to the news of Boris Johnson's resignation, Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper says simply: "Good riddance." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-65860705?ns_mchannel=social&ns_source=twitter&ns_campaign=bbc_live&ns_linkname=64837e8037572a107394d719%26Lib%20Dems%20react%20with%20just%20two%20words%3A%20Good%20riddance%262023-06-09T19%3A34%3A25.453Z&ns_fee=0&pinned_post_locator=urn:asset:b7eabda8-6a97-4a5d-9eda-0865c67ac2a3&pinned_post_asset_id=64837e8037572a107394d719&pinned_post_type=share He jumped before he was pushed: But the sanction with the most serious implications would be a suspension from the Commons for 10 days or more.
That would automatically trigger a recall petition, allowing voters in Johnson’s Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency to trigger a byelection if 10% of them call for one. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/mar/20/sanctions-boris-johnson-partygate-inquiry-suspension-recall-election

27. Going by memory...
...but I believe he was the first European leader to visit Ukraine after the start of the war. And if rumors are true, persuaded Zelensky to drop all negotiations of a cease fire, abandon any peace treaty that would result Ukraine becoming permanently neutral and persuaded Biden to heavily arm Ukraine. So....not sure where you are getting that from.
Is he an opportunist? Absolutely. He arrived on the scene after the Brexit vote and took advantage. Was it good for the UK? No. Was it good for him? Yes. Did he know Russia probably facilitated the Brexit vote? Most likely. Did he care? Probably not, he saw an opportunity to launch his stardom. |

4. As I recall, Johnson's sibling in Parliament warned of this very thing, but Borris did it anyway.
Jo Johnson, Borris' brother, resigns as MP over Brexit and Family Issues
Boris Johnson‘s younger brother, Jo Johnson, has resigned from his roles as Member of Parliament and cabinet minister, saying he has been “torn between family loyalty and the national interest.”
... It came after (Jo's) brother, the U.K. prime minister, faced a double defeat in Parliament on Wednesday, after 21 members of Johnson’s own party joined opposition lawmakers to pass a bill to prevent a “no-deal” Brexit on Oct. 31, and later turned down Boris Johnson’s request for a new election. The Conservatives Party “rebels” who voted against the government included senior members such as former cabinet ministers Philip Hammond, Kenneth Clarke, Oliver Letwin and David Gauke––along with Winston Churchill’s grandson Nicholas Soames. They were expelled from the party as a result. This decision appears to have crossed a line for Jo Johnson. |

8. Ah, the unity of the current Tory party
I'd be glad of it. as it makes them likely to lose at the next GE, but they can do a lot of damage first.
Boris is basically a terrible two-year-old who never grew up. And I bet he'll now go back to his original career as a (lying) journalist, and cause a lot of trouble that way. |

9. His price will have gone up, though
I wonder if the new Telegraph owners, whoever they turn out to be, will be able to afford him, compared to the millions he can get from the American RW for speeches. I suppose the Mail owner is still rich. I suppose you're right - it looks like he harbours enough grudges against fellow Tories to want a perch from which his attacks can be seen in the UK.

I found his idea of having a referendum on whether there should be another referendum intriguing.

so I hope we'll see one of them back in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, at least.

20. Count Binface was Lord Buckethead in 2017 as well.
He stood against Theresa May in Maidenhead.
It's one of the many reasons why I love watching British politics. You never say anything like that anywhere else. Also, I regularly watch Prime Minister's Questions. It's often better than Netflix |

11. The New York born Alexander Boris De Pffeil Johnson...
...an arrogant narcissist whom played the upper-class buffon has thrown a strop now that too many know what a nasty, lying, entitled c&nt he really is, who think that rules & laws don't apply to him & his friends (see also: Donald J Tr*mp).
If he hadn't been born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth, he'd have been fodder for the guest list of the Jerry Springer show. |

12. A 10 day saction isn't being forced out permanently
As I understand it. It looks like he's just picking up his marbles and running home to Mama. He knows his fragile ego can't stand something like a successful recall petition. Better to quit now and moan about how unfair everybody else has been to him.
I figure him for narcissistic personality disorder. He's no TFG, he doesn't strike me as a malignant narcissist, he's just garden variety. |

19. Agreed
Trump seems to have an element of viciousness for viciousness' sake. Boris J. just wants to be top dog, preferably with as little effort, either for good or ill, as possible; though he's certainly prepared to be vicious if his position is threatened.

14. Is this the death knell for the illiberal strongman era? I hope.
Alt-Right Conservativism seems to be fizzling, but, I won’t get my hopes up yet. If the Republicans get killed in the 2024 election by a wide margin, that will be our answer.

16. I wouldn't count on that.
Getting destroyed in an election does not deter the right-wing GOP. They just conclude that they lost because they weren't conservative enough and then double down on their reprehensible tactics.
