CNN — The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for flights bound for New York’s LaGuardia airport due to smoke, but has delayed some flights on the ground. Flights into Philadelphia are also being impacted because of the wildfire smoke, the FAA says. It reported the average delay is about a half-hour. A similar delay to the one at LaGuardia is in place in Newark. “The FAA has slowed traffic to and from the New York City area airports due to reduced visibility from wildfire smoke,” the FAA told CNN in a statement. “The agency will adjust the volume of traffic to account for the rapidly changing conditions.” As of 2:45 p.m. ET, airlines in the U.S. have canceled 120 flights and delayed another 1,928, according to data from tracking site FlightAware. CNN — The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented a ground stop for flights bound for New York’s LaGuardia airport due to smoke. Flights going to LaGuardia are being kept at their departing airports until 2 p.m. EDT, according to a FAA bulletin. The FAA says the chance of an extension is “low,” but delays could follow. All flights bound to Newark Liberty International Airport are being delayed from taking off from their departing airports until 11:59 p.m. EDT. An FAA advisory cites “low visibility” as the cause. As of 1:00 p.m. ET, airlines in the U.S. have canceled 74 flights and delayed another 1,257, according to data from tracking site FlightAware. The Federal Aviation Administration says the extreme wildfire smoke haze lingering over the Northeast U.S. due to Canadian wildfires could delay flights through Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

1. They should probably do this at National Airport too.
I had a Metrorail rider's view of the north end of National Airport from the Yellow Line. At least, I think that's where the airport was. It was completely obscured. On a clear day, I can easily see the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and beyond from the train. Not this morning.

2. They may try to stagger it to get planes that need refueling, "somewhere"
before doing a stop at an airport. Apparently the plumes are wrapping around and over the area with different densities so not a continual solid wall of smoke all the time.
