Chuck Todd to leave NBC's 'Meet the Press'; Welker will become host

Source: Washington Post

Chuck Todd, who has served as moderator of NBC’s Sunday-morning talk show “Meet the Press” since 2014, will pass the baton to colleague Kristen Welker, starting in September.

Todd, who will transition to a role as NBC’s chief political analyst, made the announcement on Sunday morning’s edition of the show. “When I took over Meet the Press, it was a Sunday show that had a lot of people questioning whether it still could have a place in the modern media space,” he said. “Well, I think we’ve answered that question and then some.”

Todd, 51, said he was motivated by a desire to spend more time with his family and focus on long-form projects like documentary series and documentary dramas. “I’ve let work consume me for nearly 30 years,” he said. “I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wake up before 5 or 6 a.m., and as I’ve watched too many friends and family let work consume them before it was too late, I promised my family I wouldn’t do that.”

He also praised Welker, as the right person to succeed him in the job. “I’ve had the privilege of working with her from essentially her first day and let me just say she’s the right person in the right moment,” he told viewers. Welker, 46, who joined NBC News in 2010, has long been trumpeted as a rising star at the network — and across the industry.

He was always hailed as some blur collar hero because he was from working class Buffalo. There wasn't a GOP talking point he wouldn't swallow with his sincere puppy dog eyes.

13. Yup

I remember reading about Russert whispering toward gwb and pulling his jacket back to show bush that he was wearing a gwb pin or something like that. I can't remember if it was at a debate or what.

5. Good riddance but he is still an idiot.

This caught my eye…
Still, in announcing his departure from the program, Todd sought to put his role as moderator in the context of the country’s current political moment. “I leave feeling concerned about this moment in history but reassured by the standards we’ve set here,” he said. “We didn’t tolerate propagandists and this network and program never will. But it doesn’t mean sticking your head in the sand either; if you ignore reality, you’ll miss the biggest story.”

He still kisses Trumps ass…..

What??? Most people I know quit watching Meet the Press when Todd took over. What show is he talking about? The one in his dreams?

41. Personally, I have no use for the Sunday

morning talk shows anymore. I used to watch Meet the Press on occasion during the Bush years, but they really were irrelevant and tedious. Watching a republican senator arguing with a Democratic senator just to have an opportunity to get their talking points on the air. I rarely learned anything new.

Frequent guests were James Carville and his truly awful wife Mary Matalin. What a way to ruin a nice Sunday. Still can't believe they are a couple.

I can't believe there still is an audience for those programs.

Falling ratings are showing that. Everyone is sick of pundits giving their opinions.

How ever it was funny on MSNBC. That group was actually giddy, praising President Biden.

because they are campaigning 24/7.

I'm glad someone in the mainstream media was praising President Biden though. It is so hard to get any pundits to say positive things about Biden.

I've never understood how he was so successful at MSNBC. He's not a good journalist, he doesn't ask follow up questions, rarely challenges guests, and has the personality of a dishrag. I can't think of a single positive quality that would justify his position at MSNBC.

32. I have hopes for Kristen Welker.

I find her to be intelligent and measured. And seeing more women of color in such positions is inspiring.

I didn't mind Chuck Todd in the pre-Meet the Press days when he was primarily a poll analyst. But I just couldn't stand him as a political moderator. Too much bothsiderism, and it isn't because he is fair, but because he is a lazy thinker.

Honestly, I wish Meet the Press would go back to the days when there was a panel of reporters asking questions.

40. Much of the criticism of Todd is unwarranted. You can thank Fox for this.

Fox made their "journalism" a safe space for lunkheads. People now believe every news outlet should be that. No, it shouldn't. Todd did a good job. I think Welker will do too. If you want shit "journalism," watch Fox. Real journalism doesn't say everything you'd like it to. That's what comes from real reporting.

“JOURNALISM 101 RULE: If someone says it’s raining, and another person says it’s dry, it’s not your job to quote them both. Your job is to look out of the fucking window and find out which is true. — Now more than ever.”
— attributed to many, made famous on twitter by Andrea Junker

Chuck Todd never looked out the fucking window. not once.
