Florida school bans poem read at Biden inauguration after objection of just one parent

Source: raw story

OMG! Just one parent and the school agreed to this crap. Something has to give!!

Brad Reed May 23, 2023, 9:31 AM ET

The poem that was read by poet Amanda Gorman at President Joe Biden's inauguration has been banned from elementary schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida after the objections of just one parent.

The Miami Herald reports that the poem, which is titled "The Hills We Climb," was removed from the K-5 curriculum in the county after local parent Daily Salinas challenged it as inappropriate for students.

In addition Gorman's poem, Salinas also challenged four other books: The ABCs of Black History, Cuban Kids, Countries in the News Cuba, and Love to Langston for what she claimed were filled with "indirect hate messages" inspired by critical race theory.

Salinas tells the Miami Herald that she's not in favor of censorship but she instead wants students to "know the truth" about Cuba with accurate reading materials.

The chaos that comes from giving just one crank the power to overrule everyone else is just part of the fun of wrecking public schools. Notice how there is no mechanism in these laws to give agency to the majority of parents who don't want these things banned. Just the lone crackpot.

I would say the answer is to turn it on around and start requesting everything be reviewed/banned but that just assists them in their destructive goals.

That account has a friend in which the person profile pic is of someone doing what you say is a white power symbol. I don't think that is the case, though. The picture is of some singer in some band. I think the hand gesture we see is innocent. The OK white power hand symbol troll was intended to get people to say they see white power symbolism everywhere, even in innocent cases. They feed the idea by actually using it with malicious intent, of course. But really, we should require more additional evidence to go along with the OK/WP claims.

It's not much of a huge deal with these two accounts in question because they seem abandoned and have minimal info information that can be linked to a real person. But there are cases in which innocent people got caught up in stuff simply because of bad information. There isn't much to suggest that empty Facebook account is even this person.

There was another time when such a sizeable group of citizens wanted to see the downfall of civility across the whole spectrum of that which makes up the United States. On that occasion the government drafted an army big enough to defeat them after 3 years of carnage and horror. That was a time when the "rule of law" held, but by a thread (except when it wasn't ripped apart wholesale the way war does).

I can't see a way for the US to persevere if we delay longer making right that which is plainly wrong. The excruciatingly slow processes by which our official legal system functions will not preserve us from the tireless horde bent on destruction. Mind-controlled people are hellbent on spreading a dangerous and infectious misinformation propagated by criminals hiding in the guise of elected officials who exist as pawns for the warlords who sustain them.

This could have been over by now if those elected felons had been brought to trial and their misdeeds exposed so that there could be no doubts about exactly what happened and is happening. We rely on our justice system to regulate that which our elected representatives cannot. But our justice system, so deliberate and ploddingly thorough, has done nothing to stop them thus far. It is a race of snails where every second counts. Meanwhile, as the ivory towered folks debate points of procedure and stumble along extinguishing candles, a lone parent abetted by a misguided schoolboard has pulled our civilization another certain centimeter deeper into the abyss, toward a wildfire which becomes daily more inevitable.

Don’t want them to read about the great Langston Hughes or read the poem that was written and read by Amanda Gorman, a 21 year old poet, at a Presidential Inauguration. For crying out loud, why don’t you just read a package of Wonderbread? That might be white enough for you.

We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.

It was even better than I remembered.

Rereading the poem together with the article confirmed my suspicious about what Salinas objected to:

In addition to Gorman's poem, Salinas also challenged four other books: The ABCs of Black History, Cuban Kids, Countries in the News Cuba, and Love to Langston for what she claimed were filled with "indirect hate messages" inspired by critical race theory.

There it is, in black and white: the dreaded "critical race theory" that these people don't even know how to define but are sure is the source of everything they think is wrong with this country!

Gorman's poem dares to acknowledge America's painful history while providing inspiration that we can learn from it and go forth to do better and create a country that does a better job of living up to its aspirations. For these Florida censors, no amount of inspiration can ever make up for the admission that America has ever been one iota less than absolutely 🎆PERFECT✨!
