Newt Gingrich turned partisan battles into bloodsport, wrecked Congress, and paved the way for Trump’s rise. Now he’s reveling in his achievements.

On June 24, 1978, Gingrich stood to address a gathering of College Republicans at a Holiday Inn near the Atlanta airport. It was a natural audience for him. At 35, he was more youthful-looking than the average congressional candidate, with fashionably robust sideburns and a cool-professor charisma that had made him one of the more popular faculty members at West Georgia College. But Gingrich had not come to deliver an academic lecture to the young activists before him—he had come to foment revolution.

“One of the great problems we have in the Republican Party is that we don’t encourage you to be nasty,” he told the group. “We encourage you to be neat, obedient, and loyal, and faithful, and all those Boy Scout words, which would be great around the campfire but are lousy in politics.” For their party to succeed, Gingrich went on, the next generation of Republicans would have to learn to “raise hell,” to stop being so “nice,” to realize that politics was, above all, a cutthroat “war for power”—and to start acting like it.

The speech received little attention at the time. Gingrich was, after all, an obscure, untenured professor whose political experience consisted of two failed congressional bids. But when, a few months later, he was finally elected to the House of Representatives on his third try, he went to Washington a man obsessed with becoming the kind of leader he had described that day in Atlanta. The GOP was then at its lowest point in modern history. Scores of Republican lawmakers had been wiped out in the aftermath of Watergate, and those who’d survived seemed, to Gingrich, sadly resigned to a “permanent minority” mind-set. “It was like death,” he recalls of the mood in the caucus. “They were morally and psychologically shattered.”

But Gingrich had a plan. The way he saw it, Republicans would never be able to take back the House as long as they kept compromising with the Democrats out of some high-minded civic desire to keep congressional business humming along. His strategy was to blow up the bipartisan coalitions that were essential to legislating, and then seize on the resulting dysfunction to wage a populist crusade against the institution of Congress itself. “His idea,” says Norm Ornstein, a political scientist who knew Gingrich at the time, “was to build toward a national election where people were so disgusted by Washington and the way it was operating that they would throw the ins out and bring the outs in.”

Roger Stone to make first NYC appearance since pardon at boozy party

You can’t keep a good man down. Or Roger Stone, apparently. The famed dirty tricks artist was convicted in 2019 of obstructing Congress in its investigation into then-President Trump, only for Trump to commute his sentence in 2020.

Now scot-free Stone is expected to make his first public appearance in New York since the brouhaha.

Page Six is told that erstwhile “Twinks for Trump” noisemaker Lucian Wintrich and the New York Young Republican Club are throwing a joint bash to welcome Stone — who’s been in Florida — back to the Big Apple.

We’re told he’s going to teach partygoers Richard Nixon’s secret martini recipe. (Lobbyist and political consultant Stone’s first job in politics was on Nixon’s 1972 campaign, and he infamously has a huge tattoo of the disgraced president’s face on his back).

New York’s attorney general urged a state judge to reject Donald Trump’s bid to delay her civil fraud case against him, and said the former U.S. president might use his 2024 White House run as an excuse for further delay.

In a Wednesday night court filing, Attorney General Letitia James said her office had provided Trump and other defendants with an “enormous quantity” of material, including 1.7 million documents and interview transcripts for 56 witnesses.

She said that negates their plea for an extra six months to gather evidence to defend themselves adequately at trial, now scheduled for Oct. 2, and accused them of being slow to conduct their own witness depositions. “The record defendants have and are compiling is more than sufficient to afford them due process and prevent the trial from becoming a game of surprise,” James said.

“When the calendar turns over into 2024, Donald J. Trump will be in the midst of a campaign for President,” she added. “Defendants have used his campaign as a reason for delay in both 2016 and 2020. There is no reason to believe 2024 will be any different.” Lawyers for the defendants did not immediately respond on Thursday to requests for comment.

Major Landlord Accused Of Antiblack Bias in City

The Department of Justice, charging discrimination against blacks in apartment rentals, brought suit in Federal Court in Brooklyn yesterday against the Trump Management Corporation, a major owner and manager of real estate here. The corporation, which owns and rents more than 14,000 apartments in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, was accused of violating the Fair Housing Act of 1968 in its operation of 39 buildings. Most are in Coney Island, Brooklyn, and in Jamaica Estates and Forest Hills, Queens.

Seeking an injunction to halt alleged discriminatory practises, the Government contended that Trump Management had refused to rent or negotiate rentals “because of race and color.” It also charged that the company had required different rental terms and conditions because of race and that it had misrepresented to blacks that apartments were not available.

At the corporation's main office, 600 Avenue Z in Brooklyn, Donald Trump, president, denied the charges. “They are absolutely ridiculous,” he said. “We never have discriminated, and we never would. There have been a number of local actions against us, and we've won them all. We were charged with discrimination, and we proved in court that we did not discriminate.”

Mr. Trump and his father, Fred C. Trump, the principal stockholder and corporate board chairman, were also named as defendants. They are required to respond to the complaint within 20 days. The Trump family has been in the real‐estate business for more than 40 years. In Washington, J. Stanley Pottinger, assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's civil‐rights division, termed the suit the second major rental discrimination action begun by the department in the last two years.
