Aerospace company Lockheed Martin confirms successful hypersonic missile test
Source: UPI News
Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin and the U.S. military have successfully completed a Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept test flight, the Maryland-based aerospace firm confirmed Monday. The recent test of the hypersonic weapon doubled the amount of scramjet powered vehicle data, the company said in a statement. A scramjet is a supersonic-combustion ramjet engine, capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 15. The HAWC program is being jointly developed by Lockheed Martin and Aerojet Rocketdyne on the private side, along with the U.S. military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Air Force Research Lab. The military did not specify exactly when the test was conducted. 1. It seems as if we are behind other countries in this development. Not sure why.

2. We are behind in hypersonic development
That's why General Milley spoke in Oct 2021 of the US almost having a "Sputnik moment". We're playing the "catch-up game" now.

3. The Russians have been using it in Ukraine
So I suppose the US is being open about the existence of these weapons now. The real question is can we defend against it. They are difficult to shoot down.

4. Nope.
The US was already advanced in scram-jet tech in the 60's and the designs were shelved for awhile (not because we
couldn't do it) but because they didn't make strategic sense at the time. Tests have been ongoing since and our final product will greatly outperform either the Russians or Chinese. I'm not worried. 5. Didn't Lockheed martin and the US Military announce that a year ago?
"US SUCCESSFULLY TESTS SCRAMJET-POWERED HYPERSONIC MISSILE IN SECRET
Alex Hollings | April 5, 2022" https://www.sandboxx.us/blog/us-successfully-tests-scramjet-powered-hypersonic-missile-in-secret/ "The United States successfully tested a scramjet-powered hypersonic missile in secret last month, according to new Lockheed Martin and DARPA press releases. Hypersonic missiles are advanced new weapons capable of exceeding Mach 5, or about 3,838 miles per hour, in flight. The combination of speed and maneuverability provided by these weapons makes them practically impossible to intercept using existing missile defense technologies. While Russia and China already have hypersonic boost-glide weapons in service, the United States appears to be the front-runner in fielding scramjet-powered hypersonic missiles." |

6. Thanks. Good info to know.
Our military is more ahead of what other countries do than it would let the world know.

12. Apparently, this the second (final ?) test:

DARPA, AFRL, Lockheed Martin And Aerojet Rocketdyne Team's Second Hypersonic Air-Breathing Weapon Concept Launched From B-52 Accomplishes All Test Objectives DARPA's Latest HAWC Flight Test Demonstrates Mature, Affordable Hypersonic Systems Design and Manufacturing Techniques PALMDALE, Calif., Jan. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Aerojet Rocketdyne (NYSE: AJRD) team accomplished their primary objectives during its second Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) flight test doubling the amount of scramjet powered vehicle data. Launching from a B-52, the HAWC system's first stage boosted it to the targeted engine ignition envelope, where the Aerojet Rocketdyne scramjet engine fired and accelerated the system to speeds in excess of Mach 5. The system performed as predicted travelling more than 300 nautical miles and reaching altitudes above 60,000 feet. "Affordability and reliability are essential as we work to develop operational hypersonic solutions," said John Clark, vice president and general manager Lockheed Martin Skunk Works®. "Both of our HAWC flight tests launched from an operational aircraft and matched performance models and predictions to aid affordable, rapid development of future hypersonic weapons." The Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and Aerojet Rocketdyne team worked together to progress low-cost advanced manufacturing technologies, prioritizing extreme durability to vastly reduce piece and part cost. Through the purposeful integration of digital technologies throughout the design, test, and manufacturing process, the team validated that hypersonic systems can be produced affordably at the rates required to meet the urgent national need. [...] On edit: This also would explain why the UPI article said that this doubled the amount of data. They didn't say this was the first test. |

8. Interesting that this is reported by UPI - Which was long ago a legitimate news source
I can't provide an exact date, but I believe it was in the early 1990's that the Unification Church -- under the firm control of a Korean cult leader (at that time, Sun Myung Moon) who was an extreme conservative -- bought out United Press International (UPI) to promote conservative values and issues. If you look at news sources throughout DU, UPI is rarely -- if ever -- quoted. In this case, I believe it is promoting the false idea that the United States is now trying to "catch up" with Russia, which has recently positioned ships near our borders, equipped with hypersonic missiles. This narrative makes us look inferior, but, as posters have noted above, this is OLD NEWS. UPI is banking on American ignorance of their motives and of our own capabilities. It's more conservative BS. Disregard it. The United States military structure in unequaled.

11. Could be, but it's based on a January 30 Lockheed-Martin press release.

Intresting info on UPI, thanks. I wasn't aware of what had happened to them. |
