Iran reports drone attack on defense facility in Isfahan

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Drones attacked an Iranian defense factory in the central city of Isfahan overnight, the state-run IRNA news agency reported early Sunday.

It carried a Defense Ministry statement saying the attack occurred late Saturday and caused minor damage to a rooftop. The report said three drones were shot down by Iranian air defenses.

The ministry did not say who was suspected of carrying out the attack.

Separately, Iran’s state TV said a fire broke out at an oil refinery in an industrial zone near the northwestern city of Tabriz. It said the cause was not yet known, as it showed footage of firefighters trying to extinguish the blaze.

Iran and Israel have long been engaged in a shadow war that has included covert attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities.

2. I have to wonder whether some of their people

are watching the Ukrainians using hobby drones with 3D printed bomblets and how devastating they've been. I don't imagine seeing an already unpopular government aligning with Moscow is very popular.

I doubt Ukraine has anything with that kind of reach. Maybe a little Israeli lightning struck the place, they have the capability, but we'll never know.

3. Kind of quick to use the 'I' word there.

What we do know is that Iran admitted to being attacked.

4. Who has the capability, other than people in Iran?

Israel, certainly, and they are helping Ukraine. Saudi Arabia? I don't think they've got a dog in this fight and they're still busy in Yemen. Iraq? Not sure if they'd want to provoke another war, they're struggling to recover from the last three. Turkey? Long shot, but maybe. Their own attack drones are impressive. Russia? Not a chance. Afghanistan? They might have gotten ordinance to work but they don't have anything against Iran. That's about the extent of the list. There's Azerbaijan and Armenia, but they're busy with each other.

The Ottomans and Persians were ancient enemies but that hasn't been the case for a very, very long time Israel is likely the best bet, they've seen those Shahed drones in action and might have gotten a bit nervous about Iran's weapons development. Again, we'll most likely never know for sure unless someone claims responsibility.

This is the kind of shit that causes land wars in Europe to spin out of control into world wars.

6. Doesn't have to be a nation state

There are a number of groups in the region who are likely capable of employing drones. For example, Iran has been attacking the Kurds in northern Iraq for months with artillery and drone attacks. It wouldn't surprise me if a Kurdish group decided to retaliate.

That's just one possibility. It's a complicated region.

7. I'm watching CNN International streaming

and a reporter on the ground has cited heightened tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan. If that's the case, it's totally unconnected to the war in Ukraine, but might be a fortuitous development between the loss of the Shahed factory and the destruction of the large ammunition depot in the center of the country.

The earthquakes there are likely unconnected. Even N. Korea didn't exceed a 4.0 with their successful test that collapsed their underground facility and caused a whole mountain to subside.

So maybe we'll know tomorrow, like maybe they'll find a piece of rocket or drone with a "love and kiddses from" label on it.

I just hope the US isn't bearing any responsibility, the last thing we need to do is make the Iranians rally around a rotten government because they think we're attacking them.

12. Can't disagree.

The region is a tangled mess of groups that don't like other groups and allies of convenience with coinciding interests who may be fighting each other tomorrow. Plus the whole off the shelf drone thing and garage kinetics. Who knows?

8. Probably not, but the Ukrainians have done several special ops hits deep inside russia

If asked, they would most likely deny it, but then add as other times “we are happy to see this.”

10. You open the door for a mirror action by Russia on US soil

Russia calls Ukraine a terrorist state. US supports Ukraine. There are Russians in Murmansk who say

"I'm all for using cruise missiles to take out factories in the US that support terrorist states like Ukraine."

Your policy is very unwise, to be kind. You would open the door to attacks by Russia and other nations on US mainland. You need to think this through.

14. The Iranian government is picking a fight with Azerbaijan.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/27/middleeast/iran-azerbaijan-embassy-attack-tehran-intl/index.html

There are so many countries that have it in for the pro rapist, torture and despicable regime, I don’t think we are needed. The people of Iran are chomping at the bit for freedom.
