AP Calls Arizona 9th Congressional Race For Democrat Sinema

Last edited Mon Nov 12, 2012, 03:41 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: TPM

The Associated Press called the race for Arizona's 9th Congressional District for Democratic candidate Kristen Sinema on Monday. Sinema has a lead of nearly 6,000 votes on Republican candidate Vernon Parker while early and provisional ballots are still being counted in Arizona.

In Maricopa County, where the 9th Distrcit is located, there are still 260,000 ballots left to be counted, according to the Phoenix News Times -- but only some of those ballots come from the 9th. From the AP:

Sinema becomes the first openly bisexual member of Congress. Her victory came in a year when three states approved gay marriage, and at least five openly gay Democrats were elected to House seats. A Wisconsin congresswoman also became the first openly gay person elected to the Senate.

Parker, who took the national stage briefly in September when he gave the GOP weekly address, was criticized by Democrats as a tea party radical who would hurt children by cutting the federal education department.

Looks like TPM got the candidate's name incorrect; it's Kyrsten, not Kristen. Here's a link to her website too! Thanks Veness for bringing this to my attention

Where did I hear we would've taken back the House if not for outrageous gerrymandering?

It's important to be in charge every 10 years!

Here's a wikipedia page that shows Dems getting more House votes across the nation. The page may not be up to date, not sure, anyway it shows Dems getting slightly more votes, which doesn't prove gerrymandering, but definitely shows that the Republicans owe their majority tto how the districts are drawn up (on second thought, maybe that does prove gerrymandering, or at least strongly suggests it).

I think this is a new seat from reapportionment and so it's not exactly a take away.

6 remain un-called.

1 in AZ
2 in CA
1 in FL
1 in NC
1 in UT

Bi-sexual. And in Shurf Arpaio country...too funny.

Holy smoke...just when the hand-wringers are worrying over the same sex folk and beginning to see same-sex encounters ... just when they think this is just the end of the road ... hahahahah ... here comes a new challenge. Girl can go either way...I love it. Go Kyrsten. She's also very pretty and classy looking.

How did these Tea partiers ever think their policies would appeal to families with children. The American
families in the 9th trusted Sinema to represent their interests. I guess wanting a good education for your
children makes you a "Taker."
