Putin was offered "peace deal" framework before G20 meeting

Source: Ukrainska Pravda

On the eve of the G20 summit, one of the intermediary countries in communication with both Russia and Ukraine handed Russian President Vladimir Putin the framework for a possible "deal" for direct negotiations.

In short, the essence of the proposal was that the occupied and already annexed territories in the south and east of the country would return to Ukraine, including Donbas. But the issue of Crimea would be taken off the table. For Russia, this is fundamental to the so-called ĎPutin legacyí. Therefore the deal envisaged a freeze on any talk about the status of the peninsula for seven years. Also on any talk of Ukraine joining NATO."

1. Nope.

Legitimizing a fundamentally illegal and immoral act is not the stuff of international agreements. And UKR has to nix joining NATO to boot? What kind of nut bag thinks this is a good idea?

7. Neither side was ever going to buy that

Putin thinks he's fighting the equivalent convlict that we'd have if California seceded, taking its large population and economy with it. He's bonkers, of course, Ukraine has been its own country on paper for over 100 years and now with a sense of itself since 2014.

There is really no room for compromise.

My best guess says they'll talk peace after Russia has retreated or has been kicked back across their border (depending on whee you read your news) and are taking pot shots across the border at each other. Only then will there be room for negotiations.

8. Not sure where the 100 years is coming from.

Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union for 70 years.

10. Yes, they were a Soviet state

but they didn't sign the agreement to stay within the Russian sphere after 1991. Chechnya, the 'Stans, Azerbaijan, and Belarus did. They were a separate SSR thanks to Lenin, who realized they'd be a thorn in his side if he didn't, and as long as they were an SSR, he didn't care how separate they were on paper.

That's why my post specified on paper.

9. Russia will not agree to any reasonable terms

Unless Russia keeps all the territory it claims to have annexed and Ukrainian forces leave those areas, then Putin will not go for it. That is why the screams for " peace negotiations" are not based in reality. The people who keeping calling for them know this too. They are not acting in good faith. Their only interest is that Russia doesn't lose.

11. Yes, you are spot on +1000

Russia will never act in good faith. Russia must lose on the battle field. Then, Ukraine and the neighborhood surrounding will have to be forever vigilant against future Russian aggression .

12. If true, what hubris for anyone to offer anything about Crimea when they have no right to do so...

And as reported, none who may have offered had any right.

13. Well...

... hopefully, Ukraine knows any "peace deal" with Putin is temporary. As long as he is alive and leading Russia, he should be considered at war with Ukraine. There could be years of inactivity, but Putin is never going to abide by any "peace deal."

14. Give PEACE a chance. Save the children! Far too much war loving here I think.

What is alternative, a cold winter of war again??

This is NOT appeasement or ALL peace talks are appeasement arenít they?

How do folks know itís appeasement before looking at the contract??

But carry on with the warrage, itís par for the course, be not deprived!

16. 1. It was just a proposal to start negotiations. 2. No one hates war more than a soldier.

3. It is appeasement. You are giving territory Putin took by force. There is no way any country on earth will agree to those terms.
