Alec Baldwin reaches settlement with Halyna Hutchins' family

Source: CNN

CNN — The family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer killed on the “Rust” movie set in 2021, and Alec Baldwin have reached an undisclosed settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit filed against the actor and others, according to a statement released by the actor’s attorney. The lawsuit, filed in February in Santa Fe, against Baldwin, the film’s production companies, its producers and other key members of the crew, alleged numerous industry standard violations.

Matthew Hutchins, widower of Halyna Hutchins who was killed on set, will be an executive producer on film and receive a portion of the profits, the statement adds.

“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed. The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023. I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin). All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work,” Hutchins said in a statement.

“Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation,” Alec Baldwin’s attorney, Luke Nikas of Quinn Emanuel, said in a statement.

1. Why finish the movie?

I’m reminded of “The Crow” and the “Twilight Zone” movie. Deaths of actors overshadowed the whole thing.

12. Same here

Fan of Western movies, and Alec Baldwin. I've seen him do a great job in so many movies (and SNL!)

This whole thing has really been a tragedy. I still have to fault the company that was supposed to be setting up the weapons.

11. I'm impressed that this is...

An amicable outcome for this horrible situation. That the parties agree on the conditions is something to be commended.

Yes, a talented young woman/mother died as well as the other victim, the fact that all parties appear to agree on conditions is best for all rather than a protracted battle of courts.

I think that continuing the finish the film has many points to it, one of which is the proceeds tht will facilitate the financial ends of dealing with the tragedy, probably including a trust fund for the son. Money has to come from somewhere.

13. A tragic accident? How about negligence?

"The lawsuit, filed in February in Santa Fe, against Baldwin, the film’s production companies, its producers and other key members of the crew, alleged numerous industry standard violations."

14. It will resume production...

...unless, of course, the state of New Mexico decides to file criminal charges (manslaughter or worse) against Baldwin, the prop masters, and the producers.
