Russia vetoes U. N. resolution condeming annexation of Ukrainian land

Source: Washington Post

A United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s “illegal, so-called" referendums in Ukraine, and calling on “all states” in the world not to recognize Russian annexation, failed to pass at the Security Council Friday following Russia’s veto.

Four nations — China, India, Brazil and Gabon — abstained from the vote, despite U.S. exhortations to “stand up and defend our collective beliefs.”

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said before the vote that “if Russia chooses to shield itself from accountability,” the United States would bring the matter before the 193 member nations of the U.N. General Assembly.

In March, 141 members voted to demand Russia stop its Ukraine offensive, while five voted against the resolution and 35 abstained, including many from Africa and the Mideast. Also speaking before the Friday vote, Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said it demonstrated that “some of our colleagues in the Council have reached a new low.”

2. We need a better "UN"

The security council members include the worst of the worst, and they all get veto power?

How many active conflicts exist in the world today? The UN has done some good, but we can do better.

3. Time for a new UN.

To reflect the current world reality. Let all nations decide which countries deserve Security Council status.

9. I don't mind the larger countries such as China, Russia and the US having a bit more of a say but

the nation's not part of the Security Council should have the ability in some form to overturn such a veto.

10. Abuse of veto power

The permanent members are China, Russia, US, France and the UK. The first three have abused their veto power to enable their own abhorrent behavior.

Well, possibly France and the UK too, but I'm not a historian

12. Only by changing the UN charter, but...

any proposed changes can be vetoed by a security council member.

So, in practical terms, there is no way it will happen.

16. So no contingencies for a nation going full Stalin, Hitler, etc.? That seems poorly conceived.

13. Just one.

Have the assembly declare that Russia is not the successor to the USSR and therefore can't have their seat at the security council.

11. NATO?

I think perhaps you meant the UN is backwards, not NATO. Putin claims to fear NATO and was using the threat of a NATO attack on Russia as a pretense for his invasion of Ukraine.

17. This such a fundamental issue the U.S. should review its assistance to some countries.

When these countries come looking for a handout, this should be a major factor. Let Russia and China provide the assistance in many of these cases. There can be mitigating factors, but it should only be considered in special cases in which there is justification. It is disturbing to most citizens to accept the brazen gall of countries that we assist only to have them return the favor but supporting our avowed enemies. It just as disturbing when we have to put up with the likes of China and Russia vetoing matters such as in regard to the Ukraine annexation. Regardless of how revolting this is expelling them from the UN should be carefully examined. Perhaps it is better to provide them a forum in which they can publicly demonstrate their disregard for the basic principle of sovereignty and to its neighboring countries that may be next.

18. Did anyone ever doubt Russia would veto the resolution? The point was to embarrass Russia.

A vote in the General Assembly will provide further embarrassment, but nothing binding. Still, many Russians will realize that there are serious issues with their leadership when most of the rest of the world condemn its actions.
