Migrants were promised jobs, free housing before being taken to Martha's Vineyard

Source: USA Today via MSN

MARTHA'S VINEYARD - The migrants were approached as they crossed the street to go to McDonald's. Many got their first taste of the United States while staying at a shelter in San Antonio.

An unidentified man and woman walked up to them and offered what sounded too good to be true: well-paying jobs, free housing, transportation. As an added incentive, the migrants were handed $50 gift cards.

The offer was, in fact, too good to be true. By day's end, they had all been flown to Martha's Vineyard, an island off Massachusetts' coast unfamiliar to the migrants. They were abandoned with no jobs, no housing, no explanation.

(snip)

Outside the San Antonio center, they were given the offer of jobs and free housing and the $50 gift cards, he said. They were handed red folders with what proved to be fake documents promising jobs and housing, then flown to Martha's Vineyard in private charter planes, stopping at least once along the way, Garcia said.

Through July of this fiscal year, 128,556 Venezuelans have been encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border, a steep increase from last year's total of 48,678 and just 2,787 in 2020. (The article featured a group of Venezuelan men).

Yet another new ethical low point.

Or a new high in suckiness. (Or a new low in suckiness?) I knew when I wrote it that "ethical low point" wasn't the best wording.

Sincerely, appreciate it.

I was hoping to hear from more than just the Press Secretary. I think Vice President Harris needs to address this - just my opinion, since she was specifically targeted.

But I am glad to know that at least Karine Jean-Pierre addressed it. Perhaps more will be coming.

It is a despicable act to treat those people as a campaign ad, and Abbott and DeSantis are horrible human beings.

Look, it would have been bad enough if they simply rounded up immigrants from detention centers and shipped them across state lines, but to lure them with promises off the streets is what drug cartels do when they steal people. If we arrest cartels for doing this, why can't we arrest these motherfuckers? How is it legal to traffick groups of people across state lines by luring them with promises? How is it legal to dump human beings in other states? Especially vulnerable people?

However, did you guys see the video from Martha's Vineyard? The lines of people giving hugs, food, and compassion? Looks like that part of it backfired. Those assholes assumed that the people on MV would be appalled. Instead, they acted with class and compassion.

And golly, when the whole country is talking about human smuggling, they're not talking about abortion.

Assholes.

The fact that they gave them money makes more of a case for this. I hope lawyers jump on this and sue their asses right away, making clear in the news that settlements will come from taxpayers. (Hopefully there won’t be an issue of their not having standing to sue.)
