Gas prices tumble below $4 for the first time in months

Source: CNN

London (CNN Business) Drivers in the United States can breathe a small sigh of relief — average gas prices have dropped below $4 a gallon for the first time since March. The national average price for regular gasoline fell to $3.99 a gallon on Thursday, according to AAA. Gas prices hit a record high of $5.02 in June as drivers filled their tanks for the summer travel season. They were also pushed higher by soaring global oil prices as the West turned its back on Russian crude in the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

But prices at the pump have since tumbled 21% as drivers have pared back spending and fears of a recession threatened to crimp demand. Despite the drop, they remain 25% higher than this time last year. "Despite steadily falling gas prices during the peak of the summer driving season, fewer drivers fueled up last week," the AAA said in a Monday press release.

"It's another sign that, for now, Americans are changing their driving habits to cope with higher pump prices." US crude oil prices have also fallen sharply from a peak above $120 a barrel in June to around $92 a barrel on Thursday, helped by an easing of the global supply crunch. In a report released Thursday, the International Energy Agency revised up its outlook for global oil supply, partly because Russia has continued to pump more oil than expected.

"While Russia's exports of crude and oil products to Europe, the US, Japan and Korea have fallen by nearly 2.2 [million barrels per day] since the start of the war, the rerouting of flows to India, China, Türkiye and others, along with seasonally higher Russian domestic demand has mitigated upstream losses," the Paris-based agency said.

YMMV (pun intended). Released in the off hours U.S. time but good news. I did hear a report last night about more U.S. oil producers back up and pumping now despite this IEA report (which covers since the last report) . Of course that doesn't necessarily impact the refinery issue but this helps to take away the RW loon talking points.

The GQP was quick to point out every cent gas prices went up, blaming it on Biden, of course. Now that prices are dropping, how many Repugs and Faux personalities will give him credit?

in the south... Those of us with high state gasoline taxes are far behind but it least it's getting there.

PA has a $0.576 excise tax per gallon + everyone has the $0.18 federal excise tax, for for a total of 75.6 cents per gallon here.

Heard on the radio this morning with this report, that around here in Philly, the average is $4.34. My last fill-up (actually a top-off since I usually don't let the tank go below 1/2) back around the end of June, I had paid $4.89 a gallon and that was off a high earlier that was over $5 - around $5.05 or something like that Memorial Day through early June.

Thankfully I'm not commuting to work anymore and fill-ups are few and far between!

But I know that it's now well over $60 and I get a discount at Sunoco with my grocery store card and it's also a few cents less a gallon for cash. I generally fill up these days every other week - and of course it's not on empty. And a few stations around here went over $5-a-gallon, too. And diesel was even worse, well over $6-a-gallon everywhere.

that have always charged more (in fact, one I go by on the way to my sister's house was STILL over $5/gallon just a couple weeks ago). But the larger franchise stations tend to price fix close to what others within a mile of them charge.

I had also noticed over the years that the Lukoil stations (and we had a bunch when they bought the old Mobil stations) were cheaper. Of course now that everyone knows that is Russia's company (although I think the gasoline itself is sourced locally), the station owners have been hit with boycotts by "in the know" customers (I doubt the average person would know or care though).

Many I know end up using the convenience store gas anyway which tends to be the cheapest around here - usually the Wawa.

When gas prices go down, then outside factors were the cause.
Very convenient.

The bbls of oil are just the starting point.

From what I heard last night/this morning, more U.S. refineries that were previously offline, have come back online again (to take advantage of the high prices), so that particular supply should hopefully start to get reflected (although we know they are ALWAYS quick to raise the price and sllllloooowwww to lower them, no matter what).

had been the first in the tristate area to have average prices drop below $4/gal. So yeah, I figure since it's been a couple weeks since hearing that, it would be down to that $3.89 now.

I doubt that will change much until all the tourists leave in September.

The official story is demand and cost of delivery. The root cause is we have a Trumpian Governor who imagines himself as a player on the national GOP stage. Gianforte wants a voting public in doubt about the future and frightened of high costs going into the election.
