Nebraska Republicans lack votes to pass 12-week abortion ban

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts will not convene the state legislature for a special session to consider stricter abortion laws because Republican lawmakers did not have the votes to pass a ban on abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy, he said on Monday.

The statement by Ricketts, a Republican, comes as several other Republican-led states have grappled in recent weeks with how far to go in restricting abortion access after the U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

Indiana on Friday became the first state to pass a new abortion ban since Roe's overturn, but Republican lawmakers there were divided over which exceptions to allow.

Nebraska currently allows abortions up to 20 weeks post-fertilization. Ricketts had expressed interest in calling a special session to further restrict abortion access, saying he would support a near-total ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Because if he is, pissing off a majority of voters might not be his best idea yet.

17. Opus Dei has too much influence and power in the US.

Bill Barr is reputed to be a member, along with Alito and Thomas (and probably Ginni Thomas). Leonard Leo, head of the Federalist Society is a member and on the board of Opus Dei. It has also been assumed that Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett are if not direct members closely aligned with the premises and goals of Opus Dei, which is the extreme conservative wing of the Catholic Church. Some writers have called Opus Dei the Satanic arm of the Church. They were instrumental in helping to cover up sexual abuse by priests.

“Opus Dei is not simply a conservative religious group, it is openly dedicated to wielding political and financial power in nations throughout the world. And that often means promoting and aligning itself with the most violent, reactionary regimes and acting in the shadow realms of political influence.” https://www.nationofchange.org/2022/07/07/opus-dei-supreme-indecency-extreme-deceit/

I’m not familiar with the website Looking Glass, but they have an interesting article from Alito’s confirmation hearings and the influence of Opus Dei.

“In addition to his activist record on the federal bench and his conservative ideology, Alito is deemed to be a menace to the balance of power as well as the constitutional rights of Americans. Judge Alito's affiliation with Opus Dei may be a factor in the strident opposition from Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, both progressive Roman Catholics who do not approve of the influence of religious dogma on political ideology. The majority of Americans believe in the separation of church and state, while many religious conservatives such as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell would transform America into a theocratic state. Robertson and Falwell are staunch supporters of Judge Alito.

What adds additional interest to the role of Opus Dei and the Catholic Church in US political life is that for many years unconfirmed reports have linked Supreme Court Justices Scalia and Thomas to Opus Dei. In March, 2001, Newsweek reported that the wife of Justice Scalia, "attended Opus Dei's spiritual functions." Justice Scalia's son, Father Paul Scalia, personally mediated the conversion of Justice Clarence Thomas to Roman Catholicism following his confirmation to the Supreme Court.“

Why can’t the Repukes in Congress and in State Houses SEE that they are hurting their own constituents as well???

I suppose they will keep doing it until they finally lose reelection. Or not run for reelection.

Cruelty is not my thing, so it’s always hard for me to imagine this tendency in others.
