Sinema indicates she may want to change Schumer-Manchin deal
Source: Axios
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) had a message for her Democratic colleagues before she flew home to Arizona for the weekend: She's preserving her options.
Why it matters: Sinema has leverage and she knows it. Any potential modification to the Democrat's climate and deficit reduction package like knocking out the $14 billion provision on carried interest could cause the fragile deal to collapse.
Her posture is causing something between angst and fear in the Democratic caucus as senators wait for her to render a verdict on the secret deal announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin last Thursday.
Driving the news: Sinema has given no assurances to colleagues that shell vote along party lines in the so-called vote-a-rama for the $740 billion bill next week, according to people familiar with the matter.

(5,924 posts)Who knows what gets discussed in the back rooms and the cloakrooms of the Senate? I sure don't.
They must've thought there was some way to pressure her or corner her or bribe her or cajole her into going along. And maybe there is. Who knows?

(86,378 posts)She's more dangerous inside negotiations because she can't be trusted not to rat out the whole thing.
Maybe she's been snubbed while trying to sabotage negotiations because she was found out. Maybe she's having a mad over it. Maybe she'll just quietly vote with the rest of the party in the end. She is a drama queen but maybe she sees that everybody hates her for her actions. Maybe a repug or two will vote for it.
qazplm135
(7,447 posts)1. Manchin is firm on carried interest (and it's a popular provision).
2. Sinema is against it so any negotiation that involved them both would have led to nothing.
3. So Schumer decided to get Manchin on board alone. Manchin is in WV and faces no leftward pressure at all. Manchin can afford to simply say no with zero consequences in his state.
4. OTOH Sinema has real leftward pressure in her next primary. It's not so easy to say no IF re-election matters to her (it may not).
5. To this point, Sinema has never been the one and only Senator blocking something, she's always had Manchin for cover. Now she's alone.
I'm guessing Schumer decided to put her on an island. It's a lot easier to say no behind closed doors during negotiations than it is when this is a deal that the media is more or less selling positively, the entire caucus is behind, climate activists are even saying the climate stuff is actually decent, and even Manchin is on board with adding in that not passing it means huge healthcare increases and by the way, we don't have much time left to pass anything.
That's an awful lot for a first term Senator to say no to.
There's also the fact that Sinema is notoriously hard to pin down.
Bottom line, if she's really going to torpedo this over carried interest for a handful of rich people...then she's not a Democrat and she was never going to agree to anything anyways.

(13,917 posts)Manchin gets "concessions" to get it done (not incidentally incensing/depressing liberals with the losses) , then Synema torpedoes the deal. So then she gets concessions (not incidentally incensing and breaking trust of youth and moderates with the sacrifices), and he can torpedo it.
In the end they will both get far more from private/right wing interests for obstructing and simultaneously convincing Democrats to break trust with voters on our policy promises than anything they are likely to get in negotiations

LastLiberal in PalmSprings
(12,568 posts)Just like the SCOTUS is remaking society into its warped view of what we should be doing (as opposed to the 70% that support abortion), Manchin has been reordering the economic foundations of the financial sector to resemble the GQP's goals of keeping taxpayers money in the pockets of the rich and corporations.
As for Sinema, during her last campaign she said over and over again she would work to bring down drug prices. Now she's taking the opposite position. Who would have known that she could be bought off by large donations by the pharmaceutical sector.
It's turning out that the biggest obstacles to producing the results that the majority of Americans want are in the Democratic Party. Sheesh! Just think of how much good we could be doing without these two miscreants blocking nearly every Biden proposal.
comradebillyboy

I know two of them very personally.........and they know a lot of people in there retirement home / community and they / all are very politically active...... and if your "aides' have any clue on the Political make-up here, here is a refresher......
As of January 1, 2022, Arizona's registered voters include 1,501,302 Republicans (34.5%), 1,364,178 Democrats (31.4%), 36,249 Libertarians (0.8%), and 1,449,711 "Other" (33.3%).......
dsc
(52,152 posts)and the Senate is anything other than 50/50 she will have no committee assignments, she will not be permitted to co sponsor any bill upon authored by a Democrat, and no Democrat will co sponsor a bill which she authors. Finally, every single solitary Democratic senator will endorse her primary opponent and campaign repeatedly for them.
