Top Republican: will work with Obama to avoid fiscal cliff

Source: Yahoo/Reuters

Top U.S. Republican John Boehner said on Wednesday that Washington should find a short-term solution to avoid the fiscal cliff and then work on a substantive debt reduction plan in 2013.

The White House and lawmakers have less than two months to deal with the fiscal cliff or $600 billion worth of spending cuts and tax increases due to go into effect at the end of the year.

"We won't solve the problem of our fiscal imbalance overnight," Boehner said after President Barack Obama won a second term in the White House and Republicans won enough seats to maintain control in the House.

Acknowledging Obama's re-election victory, Boehner said House Republicans were willing to work with the White House and said they would accept new revenue under the right conditions.

I still remember, the idea of compromise, according to some House Republicans.
Forgive my paraphrasing, but I think the Republicans said in so many words,

we can have compromise and bipartisanship if the Democrats capitulate and accept the Republican position.

I hope President Obama has learned he can't be an appeaser.

And the Republicans are disappearing. The Republicans will have no choice but to work with the Dems to avoid getting killed in '14. And that means big sacrifices from THEIR end.

And believe me - if they continue to obstruct, not only the Republicans will lose, but will lose in a heavy beatdown, and won't recover in time for '16.

If republicans can't get their act together and start working with the "president", not the other way around with the president "having" to give in to republicans to get anything done, then I agree with you, they will lose big time come mid term elections, and as you said, they won't be able to recover in time for the 2016 elections.

The people want results, not more of the same old BS. If the house continues playing stupid games because the tea baggers want to act like spoiled children, then Boehner needs to get tough with them, period! If he can't get them to act like adults, then the republican party will be in shambles by 2016.

I actually look for a huge division, already the tea baggers are saying Romney lost because he wasn't conservative enough, when in reality he lost because he had to kiss up to the tea baggers then try and come back to the center, then even left of center to try and get elected, and that along with all his "LIES", sunk him! The majority of this country does not want to see a flip flopping, lying, tax cheating, multi millionaire who will take us back to the same old policies, and even more radical policies than Bush, that will help only the rich and cause more suffering for the rest of the country!

The rich were not able to buy this election, sure they got some of their radical nuts re-elected in the house, but they didn't get complete control like they wanted from the WH on down. The GOP ran a bunch of clowns this year in order to cater to the tea party nuts, and they lost. Maybe Boehner sees the writing on the wall, maybe not, but it's the republican party that will go down in flames, so they either work with the president and help fix this country, or they can fade into the sunset, it's their choice!

Wed Nov 7, 2012, 06:25 PM
Nov 2012

This was the mantra on the screens of public TVs showing "news" in the building I work. I thought, "Yeah, right...the 'fiscal cliff' you scum in the GOP created with your irresponsible stewardship of the country's economy."

Bill Clinton left office with a surplus: it took Boy George and the Repubs to turn that into a multi-trillion dollar deficit what with tax cuts for the rich and getting us into two wars. Now they want us to forgo our Social Security and Medicare to make up for it!

"Right conditions?" Yeah, the right conditions meaning let the Bush tax cuts expire and use that money for infrastructure and job creation. That would be a start toward the "right conditions."

It may be that the wealthy will have to start working for a living...

Last lame duck session they kicked the can down the road to the next lame duck session with a speed bump in between. Now we are coming up on the next speed bump and Boehner is again ducking. My guess is that Obama will talk nice but hold firm, meaning no small, little token new revenue. Small ball will not work and Obama will not accept small ball.

I just don't see a downside to this "cliff"...and I'm quite convinced it scares the crap out of Boehner.

Money spent anywhere in the economy right now is better than on defense. Bring the troops home from Afghanistan starting right away. Let them finish their commitment here in the states where the wages they spend will help the economy.
The reason the republicans are scared of cuts to defense because they depend on defense contractors to help fund their campaigns with a share of the exorbitant profits the government pays them.
Cut defense funding now. Do not wait for a deadline, do it now.

The so-called fiscal cliff is a sledge hammer that President Obama now has poised over the GOP heads.

We need to back him up. He needs to let us walk over that cliff...that means we need to be prepared to see our taxes go up in January...then make the offer (retroactive to boot) and dare them to vote against it.

So we need to be prepared for a temporary tax hike. Batten down the hatches and back him up!
