'Law & Order: Organized Crime' Crew Member Killed in New York in Early Morning Ambush

Source: Variety

A crew member for “Law & Order: Organized Crime” was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in New York while on location for filming of the show’s third season, Variety has confirmed.

“We were terribly saddened and shocked to hear that one of our crew members was the victim of a crime early this morning and has died as a result,” NBC and studio Universal Television said in a joint statement. “We are working with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate. Our hearts go out to his family and friends and we ask that you respect their privacy during this time.”

According to multiple media reports, the unnamed crew member was sitting in his car at approximately 5:15am ET in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn when an unknown person approached the car, opened the door, and opened fire. Filming was to take place in the neighborhood Tuesday, and the crew member was there early as part of set security to reserve parking and guard equipment trucks. It is unclear at the time of this publishing if the killer knew the victim or what the possible motive could be.

1. Sounds like "reserve parking" was the issue, on first glance

5. The gunman didn't arrive in a car...

...and blocking parking (with Police permits) for TV crews is pretty standard in NYC.

6. Gunman could live in the neighborhood and walk to the scene of the crime

What's normal to most people may not seem normal to all.

7. Reminder: most New Yorker's don't own cars.

Nor do they lay claim to parking spaces the way they do in Boston.

3. America, where crime and criminals are TV entertainment

The crew member should not have died for others entertainment.
Neither the primary Adrenalin rush of the killer nor the contact rush of the show's viewers are defensible.

4. It's interesting...

... and in no small measure ironic that as I read this I am besieged with advertisements for concealable pistols and high capacity magazines...on this very page.

A good start in common sense weapons control would be banning advertising for guns and accessories in the same way tobacco advertising is banned. And for the same reason. It's hazardous, even lethal, to the health of human beings.

8. having worked as a PA on commercials early in my film career...

the poor person who was shot was probably a PA.

we were always first to set and last to leave and had the shit jobs. all for the glory of working in film at a minimum wage.

I can't tell you the amount of times I was out on urban or remote locations to "park the trucks" aka stage the trucks for the day.

sometimes it can be really peaceful other times, it can be fucking down right dangerous.

this poor guy and his poor family
