Prosecutors say Steve Bannon's offer to testify to the January 6 committee is 'irrelevant' for his c

contempt of Congress trial

Federal prosecutors in a Monday court filing dismissed Steve Bannon's offer to testify to the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection as "irrelevant" to the criminal charges against him and "a waste of time."

"The Defendant's sudden wish to testify is not a genuine effort to meet his obligations but a last-ditch attempt to avoid accountability," federal prosecutors said.

Bannon is set to stand trial July 18 on contempt of Congress charges, but he has asked to delay the proceeding in light of the publicity around the House January 6 committee's public hearings.

On Saturday, after months of stonewalling the committee, an attorney for Bannon told Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the House committee, that the former Trump aide would testify after all. The committee is investigating Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost, and the actions of the Trump-supporting mob that invaded the Capitol.

1. The lush is just going to spew his white nationalist Trump bullshit anyway, and take the 5th.

Might interesting if they asked him about his build the wall grift and where all that money went....like into insurrectionists hands.

5. The DOJ is basically saying - It doesn't matter if Bannon cooperates now...

the criminal indictment is punishing him for his past non-compliance.

8. "Your honor, my client robbed the bank, but he now says he'll return the money.

The charges should be dismissed.

9. Methinks he is under the bus

Originally, it was reported that Trump was releasing Bannon from "privilege" so that he could testify. This was couched in some kind of magnanimous gesture from someone with nothing to hide while also giving him cover for his contempt.

But it was revealed that he never had invoked privilege. Which would seem to really expose Bannon since he was hiding behind something that was not just legally suspect but legally nonexistent.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

10. Hey, Bannon!

Did you really think the J6 Committee would let you dictate to them the terms of your testimony? If so, you're an even bigger idiot than I thought.

The lawyers at the DOJ are far smarter than you. The members of the J6 Committee and their staff are smarter than you.

In fact, the Committee really doesn't need your testimony any more. You've been charged with contempt of Congress and you will get your day in court.

Have fun!

Idiot.
