SC Democrat seeks age limit for 'geriatric' politicians
Source: Associated Press
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Democratic gubernatorial nominee Joe Cunningham is proposing an age limit for South Carolina politicians — a cap that would cut off the 75-year-old incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster — and making a veiled argument that even fellow Democrats like President Joe Biden are staying “in office way past their prime.” “Our country and our state are being run by a geriatric oligarchy, people who stay in office way past their prime,” Cunningham says in a campaign video, provided Wednesday to The Associated Press ahead of its public release. “Some of these folks have been clinging onto power for 30, 40, even 50 years,” Cunningham says. “The folks who are making a career out of politics are making a mess of our country.” Cunningham proposes instituting a 72-year-old age limit for South Carolina politicians, a retirement bar already in effect for the state’s judges, and one that would take a constitutional amendment, approved by voters, to implement. South Carolina currently requires judges to retire officially at age 72, although jurists are allowed to stay on the bench in a fill-in capacity beyond that age limit. 4. If this was the case at the national level, neither Biden or Trump could run in 2024.
If reelected, Biden will be 82 on inauguration day.
If Trump runs, he'll be 78 when he loses to Biden. |

5. Wisdom comes with age
I believe politicians can be too young for office too. In our shallow mass media age they learn to emulate the immediately previous generation before they've felt the ups and downs of political, electoral, economic, market cycles so they could make their own judgments.
Term limits are the answer though. |

7. Well, we DO have lower age limits for some offices. And YES to term limits!
And before anyone chimes in with the usual "we have term limits; its called voting" nonsense; move along with that lameness.

6. That is not something I would expect in a democracy
that is supposed to treat people as individuals. That crazy proposal probably won't help him get votes from seniors.

9. Almost 60% of Americans support an upper age limit.
And its bipartisan with the percent of Ds and Rs supporting roughly the same. I don't think it will be an issue in 2024 because I doubt either Biden or Trump will be running.

11. This should
be implemented Federally...
Additionally, I'd also suggest term limits as well.... Stop the 30-50 year stints in politics... |
