India bans wheat exports as heat wave hurts crop, domestic prices soar

Source: CNN

India banned wheat exports on Saturday days after saying it was targeting record shipments this year as a scorching heat wave curtailed output and domestic prices hit a record high.

The government said it would still allow exports backed by already issued letters of credit and to countries that request supplies "to meet their food security needs."

The move to ban overseas shipments was not in perpetuity and could be revised, senior government officials told a press conference.

Global buyers were banking on supplies from the world's second-biggest wheat producer after exports from the Black Sea region plunged following Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Before the ban, India had aimed to ship a record 10 million tonnes this year.

1. Climate change is starting to rear is ugly side.

Just took a war in Ukraine for it to become much more noticeable.

3. There isn't a day that goes by now that I am thankful I didn't have children.

I would have been heartsick to have brought them into what is coming.

Yes, in 20 years, we will look back and think wowit was nice to have fuel for our vehicles, food to eat, ample drinking water, etc.

Soylent Green world is coming, at the very least.

9. All you can do is get them ready for it.

Sad, but true.

Has a feel to it now the end of the original Terminator movie.

11. I know it's considered a terrible movie, but some of the ideas in the film Postman (1997)...

always seemed ring true to me, as to what humans will be dealing with in the future. Sci-fi writers are pretty damn good at that.
By the way, the ending of The Postman is just HORRIBLE! So corny. I can't believe someone came up with that, and everyone agreed to it.
Just an awful ending.

14. I don't have children, but I do have a 29 year old niece

I also had a 28 year old co-worker. Neither of them plans on having children. The only young white people I know who are having kids are right wingers.

6. Hunger & desperation will definitely seed more uprisings throughout the 3rd world that will

add to the tensions of the Russo-Ukrainian War.

10. One of the few smart things Modi has done

but it's going to piss off a lot of businessmen. I just hope the rains come in time for their rice and other crops.

13. Unfortunately, winter wheat in the US doesn't look good either....

Particularly in the southern plains. The flip side of the wildfires in Texas and Colorado. The conditions necessary to create wildfire problems also devastate agriculture. We got to 90 yesterday in freaking Vermont! In May! We just hit last average frost date a day or two ago and it's freaking 90 outside?! Well, what use to be last average frost date anyway.

15. No wheat from Ukraine or India

not looking good for folks in developing countries who depend on it.

American wheat crop is not looking good either but we have plenty of options here.
