Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that the Kremlin had decided to carry out a special military operation in Ukraine.
The situation requires us to take decisive, swift action, he said in an early morning speech, adding that Moscow would carry out the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine and end eight years of war in eastern Ukraine, where Kyiv government forces have been fighting pro-Moscow separatist militants.
Explosions could be heard in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and Kharhiv, in the countrys northeast. Putin told Ukrainians to give up their weapons and to return home.
Senior Russian military commanders gathered in Moscow in the early hours of the morning, according to a U.S. government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

To my Ukrainian friends:
слава україні, слава героям! (slava ukrayini, slava heroyam!) (Glory to Ukraine, Glory to the Heroes!)
May the name Putin forever burn in hell with Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and all the other evil totalitarian dictators that ever lived.

(187,843 posts)They lost somewhere between 20,000,000 and 27,000,000 people in civilian and military deaths.
Mostly at the hand of Germany.
The Cold War persisted mainly because the old guard there wasnt about to let Americans win without a shot when they lost so many to Germany.

(8,409 posts)Two booms heard from my apartment on Khreshatyk, Kyiv in the past 3 minutes, CNN reporter Neil Hauer said.
Other reports of a large explosion in Kharkiv in northeast Ukraine are also filtering through.
this may be targeted hits against military infrastructure and not part of an overall invasion, just not hearing, seeing followup after the first reports.

(4,488 posts)did welcome the German army, a mistake they realized too late. They thought they were getting rid of one mad man, Stalin, who murdered millions of Ukrainians. Instead, they got another mad man. They were between a rock and a horrible hard place.

(460 posts)but we've let him go about his business too long, it's either take care of him now or take care of him later when it's harder. 3/4 of the Russian military is surrounding Ukraine, that's tiny compared to what they used to have and they won't all be in one place again for a long time....

(4,650 posts)that want to join Russia... I take it they're like our MAGATs, here. If there could be a way for all who would NOT want to join with Russia, who identify as Ukrainian to move to other cities further west, would it not be a way to avert WWIII?
On one hand, I see it as much of an appeasement as letting these stupid MAGA truckers do their thing on our roads. But we're letting them, aren't we? The one thing I can argue against this is, where does the road west stop for Putin? We give in now, he roils up trouble in the next two regions and here we go again. I agree with whomever said on another thread he must be taken out. And I reiterate it saying "in all haste." But sanctions have no effect on him. Like Trump, he just doesn't care. His own people could starve and he wouldn't care as long as he gets his 15 minutes of fame and gets to put a boot on the neck of democracy someplace. I don't want to see us drawn into a war - by proxy or otherwise. But I gotta tell you, at this point, I don't see any way we're going to keep from it. Putin isn't going to let it go until he either rebuilds the old USSR or we sit him down on his ass. My fear? We can't deal with a tin pot dictator like Trump in our own country. How in the hell can we deal with a Putin? (without WMD, of course!)
I'm open for walking back, cause I sure don't like what I came up with!

He probably should be paranoid, if we take down his cronie's access to their money they might come looking for him. He's run a crime family for 20 years and he forgot the number one thing ever crime lord knows; war is bad for business.
