Civilians in rebel-held Donetsk 'to be evacuated'
Source: BBC News
People in the rebel-held city of Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine, will be evacuated to Russia, the area's leader has said.
Denis Pushilin, who is head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), announced on social media that Russia had agreed to provide accommodation for people leaving.
Women, children and the elderly should be evacuated first, he added.

The US and its allies have raised concerns that rising violence in the Donbas region could form part of a Russian pretext to invade Ukraine.

Analysis: Evacuations troubling as disinformation swirls
Paul Adams
BBC diplomatic correspondent
The announcement by Denis Pushilin that women, children and the elderly will be evacuated to Russia is, potentially, a very troubling development.
The idea that an evacuation is needed because Ukraine is planning an attack on the two Russian-backed self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk is baseless.
With a vast chunk of Russia's military might positioned around Ukraine's borders, such an attack would be an act of lunacy. It is, quite simply, unthinkable.
But the separatists, and Moscow, want to create the impression of imminent danger. Yesterday, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the situation around Russia's borders could ignite at any moment.

(6,885 posts)Russia has a tendency to encourage its citizens to move into countries it wants to occupy. It provides Russia with the excuse to complain that the Russian settlers in a given country are in danger and in need of military intervention
For example, Estonia's population is currently about 1/4 Russian. A large number of Estonians were dragged out of their homes and sent to Siberia after WW2. Russia then encouraged Russians to settle in Estonia with various incentives. They are still there.
My mother and grandmother narrowly escaped being deported to Siberia by running out the back door of their landlord's house.
Same situation in Latvia and Lithuania.

(14,677 posts)I hope it's not the scenario in this tweet from a journalist in Ukraine:
Olga Tokariuk@olgatokariuk
A scenario discussed on 🇺🇦 Twitter: buses with residents of Luhansk and Donetsk regions, who have been ordered to evacuate to Russia (and many of whom hold Russian passports), may be hit by Russian artillery and an attack would be blamed on Ukraine as a pretext for an invasion
